'91 E350, 7.3 ltr diesel, auto. Going down the highway. heard a light ticking sound that lasted 5 - 6 seconds, then 'chunk'. Engine stopped immediately. Coasted to a stop. Engine is seized solid. I'm, assuming I sucked a valve and the immediate stopping of a running engine may have torqued the crank. Any ideas? any (helpful) suggestions?
One idea is to replace the engine. What engines work without computer modifications?
Will a powerstroke fit and if so, do I need a new computer for the engine or tranny?
I have a rebuilt carburated 351/400. How difficult will it be to swap?
The good news is that engine doesn't run off a computer, the bad news is nothing else will fit without major component swapping. You'd have to change trannies to put in the gasser and the Powerstroke would be an electrical nightmare. It is run by computer. Van huh, might as well just go buy another one.
Are you in Idaho? I know a guy who was selling one there.
not a lot of good news, to offset the bad. I do however have a tranny for the 400. It's coming out of my'76 F350. Body on that is shot. This is Minnesota.
It's my understanding that the diesel cylinders are not sleeved, so I'd need a block if the wall is chewded up. I can find heads and a piston, as needed. My biggest concern, if I was going to rebuild, is a torqued crankshaft. Any possibility it survived?
Of course, being a van, the engine is going to be a bugger to get out. Any suggestions? or is removing the front the easiest way?
Yeah, sorry about that. You will have to pull it all out the front. You need a good hydraulic cherry picker (over 1000 lbs.), especially if you take the tranny with it. I had to use a tranny jack too to help keep the engine/trans the right angle on the way out.
That engine (even if most of the parts survived), will be a fortune to rebuild. A long block from a rebuilder is around 3600 bucks! If you have all the pieces I'd try putting the gasser in there, or maybe you could find another running diesel. Even a 6.9 would go right in there (provided it came out of a van). Otherwise you'd have to swap over all the van pieces from your motor.
I guess we've got the cart before the horse a little. By all means, see what happened to your 7.3 first, but it doesn't sound good.
forget the 400. too small. Now it looks like I'm going with a 429/460 with C6. Got a friend, who has a friend...anyhow got a lead on 2 460's and a 429 with trannys. Going to be cheaper than a rebuilt diesel. Still haven't gotten the van back, so still haven't opened the engine to find the problem. Still suspect the valve.
