1948 Ford F-6 Car Hauler auction

Just saw this. Thought it might be of interest. I’m not involved in any way with the sale.

I've seen this one listed before - guess it isn't selling due to an unreasonable reserve price. Additionally, the 254 (if that is even what it has) isn't the easiest engine to find parts for and it has the RH-5° Widowmaker wheels.

It appears someone attempted to decode the serial number to identify the engine, not paying attention to the fact the 254 has been swapped out with a later model 300-6. It's also a 49/50, not a 48, fyi. 98RTH241771

And yet it has a "clean" Illinois title , presumably showing it to be a '48?! I wonder if the s/n on the title matches the truck's frame?

It's a long ways from being a finished truck, IMO. Look where the headlight dimmer switch is installed. And how they "clearanced" the front frame crossmember for the 300-6.

I keep looking at the serial number and something wasn't adding up. Then it dawned on me, 98RTH would be a 239 V8 equipped F6. MTH would be the 254 F6. Not sure where they got any of the information they're peddling. This makes sense since I would expect a 241000 serial number to be a '49, and from all accounts in the catalogs as I read them, the 254 wasn't introduced until 1950.

Good catch on the crossmember, Ross. I was wondering how they got that long 300 in there.

From the looks of it, the stock dimmer switch is in the right place - to the left of the clutch on the toe board. (see pics 119-121)

Pictures 118 and 126 clearly show something like a dimmer switch on both sides of the cab, but mounted high above the floor. I wonder if it's something related to the conversion - kill switch on the winch or emergency lights or other that would be handy to reach from either side of the cab???

I saw that and your assumptions make sense.

Cutting it should be fine if you leave part of the lip in place and box the cutout part.
