For yall that are splitting logs regularly. What do yall recommend tonnage wise for splitters?? Ive had some say nothing smaller than 20 ton. Others say 5 ton is fine. Just wondering what the ones here that do it regularly think??
power wood splitters are for city slickers.
a monster maul and a stihl chain saw will do 4 cords in a day..
i got the saw. I even got a wood maul axe. But i also got a bad back and 2 bad knees.

yup yup. I picked up 2-1/2 cords of cut and seasoned wood for this year. But hoping to not buy again. This year was kinda last minute planning. I have some trees on my property i plan to take down this year and picking up some free logs here tomorrow. A property owner near me dropped some oak trees and just giving me the logs for free. 14 logs that are 2-3 ft diameter and maybe 13-14 ft long (guessing. Theyre pretty long).
a 25 ton splitter will do anything you come across and the cycle time isn't too bad. mine is 11-13 seconds
Bigger tonnage have longer cycle times if it matters. I've split some right nasty stuff with my 25 ton and it's done it all.
I sledged/wedged for years but after getting some rock hard maple in and elm it can beat a person down and who has time to spend a day attempting to hand split
a dozen rounds when the machine can do it in an hour. That stuff broke one of my wedges heh..
ps 3 year plan.. if you're going to start burning and not buying wood.
hey now, i was in my 40's when i used the monster maul.
and had to take a week off after splitting that 4 cords in one day.
but i showed the young whippersnappers that "the old man" could still kick their asterisks.
i have not done firewood in 20 years as this house does not have a wood stove or fireplace..
i replaced the shop stove with a natural gas boiler 8 years after moving in.

this year was a last minute thing. I decided to get a woodstove put in to lower the heating bills after last years single digits. I have a heat pump that doesnt do well when it gets near freezing. Right now the stone works just gotten finished. I gotta tile the floor protector then theyll come in and put the stove in. Not sure how quick itll burn through the 2-1/2 cords. (Supposed to be pretty efficient). So will see this year how it goes. Paid $240 for that seasoned and split 2-1/2 cords.
I payed the same $240, burning about 3 cords average. I bought this Earthquake 5 ton elec. splitter years ago, works grate splitting some of the big stuff down as needed.
Old faithful maul hasn't been used in years.....I'll hang on to it, ya never know, might need again.
That is some cheap wood! Last add I saw was $250.00 per cord plus delivery and another charge for stacking.
I converted to a pellet stove last year and my son in law let's me know when lowes does a 1/2 price clearance at the end of the year and I buy 3 pallets for the next year.
I bought a used 20 ton years ago & its still splitting every year. 20 is enough unless you are doing it as a full time job.
just remember the wood needs to by dry & seasoned before you burn it.
For years growing up early on I thought my name was "get wood" Now when I light the fireplace, it's chemical logs from Home Depot. Love my central air/heat. Last time I used a splitter it was a 5T gas burner. We worked the hell outta that thing and it kept on splitting, (oak) mainly.

A few years ago I was splitting wood in the back yard (for my own use) and broke the wooden handle on my sledge hammer. I'd just overextended and the handle came down on top of the wedge
So I made a trip to Home Depot to replace it. As it turned out, there had been a run on them and there wasn't an 8 or 10 pounder in the store. But they did have a 16#.
Curious I picked it up and hefted it as if I was going to hit something. "oh, hell no!" was my reaction. "I'm the biggest SOB that'll walk into this store today and I want no part of this. Who would actually want to use it????"
I'm sure it's got a usage, but yeah -- that's for a younger man.

reminds me of my maul. Handle broke. Had a heck of a time finding a replacement since its got a small rounder hole instead of a big ovalish hole. First swing at a log after getting it together. *SNAP!!! BING BING BING!!!*. Shank snapped right at the bottom of the head leaving me with a 4 ft handle and no maul head attached to it. Managed to reshape the rest of the handle and make it fit back into the head but been afraid to try again with it since.
