Test drove a 6.7L this weekend
Yup, me, the "anti-diesel guy." I was riding around with a friend looking at new tractors on Saturday, when we rode by a Ford dealer. This dealer is known for 'specializing' in trucks, and they usually keep stock of unique ones...whether lifted, deleted, flatbeds, or 20-30 year old nice, low mileage ones...etc. So we try to stop in anytime we are close to see what they have.
So we pulled in, and I spotted a new F350 sitting all by itself. I saw that it was a diesel XL, so curiosity got to me and I hopped out to take a closer look. $68k. OK, not bad. Figured I'd waste some time and drive a 6.7L for the first time...and the 10-spd. If I can buy one before my 2024 order gets built, I'll do it.
Salesman wanted to ride with us, so I couldn't push her limits like I wanted to. Drove a 55mph highway for a few miles each way...a few good hills on it. The truck rode like a dream...much smoother than my 2018, and even smoother than my friends 2023 F350 SRW. My previous 2016 Ram dually was a brick in comparison. The 6.7L had plenty of torque, obviously, but I was actually expecting more. I got on it at a 50mph roll a couple times...plenty of go, but it didn't wow me. The transmission was buttery smooth, but I would have liked to get it on roads I drive...35-55mph 2-lane country roads in the mountains. On this highway, it basically got to 10th and stayed there (3.55's). My friends 10-spd is very busy. He's starting to complain about it now that the new is wearing off for him.
We get close to the dealer and slow down to cross the divided highway and pull in. The cab fills with the stench of its first regen, and the oils from the engine and exhaust burning off from one of its first heat cycles. (HVAC was on) I don't miss that. I park it and we bail out immediately for fresh air. While BS-ing with the salesman (young 'kid', very green to the sales world), I'm going over in my head if I'd be crazy to even consider another modern diesel. For towing 12k and 8 mile trips to work, I'd be stupid to based on numbers. Since the sticker price is close to the 2024 I ordered, I asked whats the best they'd do on it. He comes back and says the manager will do me a favor and take $500 off sticker. LoL. They don't honor Xplan like the dealer I ordered from.
Anyways, that's my cool story from the weekend. It did prompt me to change my 2024 order from a SRW to a DRW (same drivetrain though) because I realized I missed the stability/handling/looks of one. But going to the DRW, Ford hasn't figured out how to put the blackout package, or the XLT Premium package in one. Maybe someone should tell Ford that 2 more tires has nothing to do with those packages. They just want you to jump up to the Lariat. Oh well...I didn't want all that tech or the nannies anyways. I just wanted the LED's and heated seats. But I guess I'll save $6k...

I'm sure the majority of the stench is from the oils and coatings on the engine and exhaust burning off. But my Ram's exhaust would dang near knock me out if I was by the tailpipe hooking up my trailer or such. Hate the smell of these emissions diesels.

We have 2020 F550 6.7 at work that would choke a maggot when it goes into regen, man that stench is awful.

My Cummins didn’t feel peppy until after 2000 rpm. Apples and oranges I know, but the turbo likes to be spinning to make power.

I have only noticed the smell of the hot exhaust system once, and that was in the first 2k miles. I have over 7K miles and regens on my 23 take about 10 minutes and usually are done while I am driving and I never notice any smell from them. Glad that you have an open mind to try one. Yea I know you will remind us of the cp4, cost, etc but remember you will always have the #2 spark plug wire and lifter problems.

Mine was definitely much stronger smelling and noticeable during regen when new. Like you said, some of it from the oils and coatings burning off. I find the exhaust on my SD, even standing right next to the exhaust tips, to be nearly odorless most of the time. Sometimes I can pick.up on what I assume is a DEF odor, even that is mild and only if I stand at the tailpipe. Never notice any exhaust or regen related smells while inside the cab.

what are these regens people keep talking about? my DEF level hasnt changed in a year. something wrong???????
nice looking truck OP. whats funny about the diesel is if you put the pedal to the floor it doesnt feel as fast as if you roll into it more. it took me a bit to figure out how to drive mine with the 6speed versus driving a 5.6 v8 titan.
