My AOD seems to be upshifting early. The truck shudders a bit upon normal upshifts 2-3 is the most noticeable. If I stomp on it or downshift to an RPM' range > 2000 shudder goes away.
Is there a way to adjust the shift points on the AOD? My motor mounts look ok..kinda hard to tell; otherwise truck has great acceleration as long as I'm in the right RPM range.
Maybe AOD is wore out...
Thanks for any insight.
Increasing line pressure will raise the shift points some and firm up the shifts a little, and to do that you just increase the preload on the TV cable adjuster on the throttlebody.
A couple things to note..
- The TV adjuster is spring loaded so you need to have control of it before releasing the lock, if possible mark the adjuster with something in case you lose control of it.
- There is only a small range of line pressure that is acceptable and there may only be 2-4 notches of adjustment in this range, too low and the trans will slip, too high and up/down shifts require too much throttle and RPM.
If you totally mess up and lose your place on the adjuster a good starting point is to simply take all the slack out of the cable at closed throttle. Have a look at this video, he shows the truck adjuster starting at about 2:44. Bing Videos
These are made to upshift early for 'fuel economy'. Tweak as pointed out, really easy to do once you know what you are doing with it.
Keep out of OD in the city as bogs you down and beats on the forward clutch pack from the 4-3 and 4-2 downshifting. Install some external trans cooler unless already equipped. B&M 70264 is my go-to.
All tranny fluid and filter changes were about 2 yrs ago. So I checked my TV cable at the TB and it had a little slack in it; so popped the clip and pulled it back a bit so cable was just starting to pull on the ball socket. Wow...what a difference. 90% of shuddering gone. Steady throttle causes noticeable firm 1-2 upshifts and 3rd gear seems to be in a good rpm range. Very satisfied. If this destroys the transmission, so be it; it prob needs a rebuild after 35 yrs anyways. Thanks for all the information folks.
