I have a 1984 F150 with a 302 2 barrel, 4x2. I have decided to install a new engine, transmission, PCU, wiring harness, etc.
I am interested in another V-8 such as a modern 302 (5.0). Not necessarily high performance, but one that with a transmission can be easily dropped in with out too much modifications. I have a reputable mechanic who has done this before, but also want additional feedback and suggestions.
I want to stay with Ford as replacement.
Can anyone give me some advice?
Welcome to FTE In my opinion, you have everything you need. The 84 truck 302 was not a high horse version, but a complete rebuild, (.30 over bore, makes it a 306), with parts of any of the better performing 302s would make a great engine. It doesn't matter what transmission you have, they all take a relative amount of work to pull and install. Have your mechanic install some Mustang parts, (intake, headers, etc) and you will have a strong, reliable engine with power to spare. Junk yards ore full of 83, 84, 85 Mustang 302s. Check out the, "Performance, engine, troubleshooting" forums.

I made you a new thread in the engine forum for the 302. This comes up all the time--the late model 302 will slide right in there with a few minor tweeks.
Wow, looks like a lot of excitement already on this one!
Personally, I'd hop up the stock engine, unless you really wand to dump many thousands into it getting a Coyote and making it work while the gauges read properly. The 302 has several oodles of aftermarket support.
