Back window insurance claim

The back window on my 79 got smacked by a rock thrown form a semi. I have zero deductible but every company I've called says they can't get my back window. I understand that they all work up to 96 but I'm not sure how to get a glass company to do it as an insurance claim?

Any suggestions?

My recommendation -

DO NOT use insurance on a cheap repair like that. Your premium goes up and you end up paying more in the long run for a couple hundred dollar repair.

Also, everyone else who uses the same insurance company you have ends up paying for your back window.

My insurance company (State Farm) doesn't count it against me. I have had multiple windshields replaced at no cost and my premium has never gone up.

I would think you would be able to work that out with the glass company, because you can buy the normal one piece back glass for like $70 from LMC and other sources. They should be able to pay you for it or something, but it's all up to the shop.

There are plenty of replacement sliding rear windows available. but if you want an original looking one you're going to have to find a good used one or an NOS one somewhere. that's on you the glass shop's not going to do it.

I would look for another glass company. This is as simple an install as they get on older vehicles.

I have called numerous auto glass shops and nobody can get any window for it. I found the window at LMC and verified that my insurance company will reimburse me for the window and the installation by a local glass shop.

Next I am going to see if I can get the shop to order it through LMC and just bill my insurance?

I did my back glass with a new seal. In fact the wife helped out and we had it knocked out in about 30 minutes. Super simple repair with a piece of #12 stranded wire and someone to puta little pressure on the glass whilst you set the seal with the wire and a bit of soapy water.

I already had the glass though.... but I have seen several sources under a 100 bucks~

Ford Pickup Glass Rear Back Glass 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 Truck | eBay

1973-79 Sliding Rear Window (lmctruck.com) New slider, super expensive to me...

Rear Window and Seal (lmctruck.com) Solid glass... 75 bucks.

And a bunch more. Your glass place is really lazy. Change companies.

+1 for this. Well not so much lazy as they really just don't want to work on older seal style windows. I would bet that it's not a matter of sourcing the glass, they just don't want to deal with the hassle. New caulk in place windows are easier/ faster to install and much lower risk of cracking during install- so more profit with less liability. Plus, the seals are a pain to get ones that fit right and don't leak. So, less comebacks too.
I had a conversation with a glass installer friend the other day trying to talk him into installing the windshield on my 75. He works for a bigger name company, and they steer away from older stuff on purpose as well. They don't actually refuse or make excuses; they just charge a lot more and let the problem sort itself out. If you're willing to pony up the extra, they will grumble a little and do it. He went from grumbling a little bit to a lot more when I mentioned mine had the chrome strip too,

If your gasket isn't leaking now no reason it should with new glass. Yes up to 96 a year or so later with SD style. You can do salvage yard super cheap for glass. Don't accept any with pits or scratches. PITA to get broken glass out of gasket but probably the easiest glass you can do.

That simply isn't the case. I spent a great deal of time with three of the most reputable places while they tried to find the glass, none could find it in their sources. Once I found it at LMC and gave them the part numbers, they were happy to order it from LMC and install it, and do it all under the insurance claim.

You got lucky X3. Just about every place around here won’t do the work unless they get the part from one of their suppliers. You think dentside glass is rare? Try finding Viper glass. The rear hatch glass was vandalized on our ‘96 and I probably went to 10 shops after I located an NOS piece after weeks of searching for the small sum of $1300 and just wanted someone to install it. With the right install tools it was an hour and a half of work at most. $150 in labor. Easy money, right? Nobody would even talk to me as soon as they saw that their dumb computer couldn’t find anything. But I have the glass I say! Sorry, we can’t do that. I finally found a very cool and locally owned place that didn’t even bat an eye and just said “Sure, no problem” as if they were wondering why I gave them a 5 minute backstory about the situation. It’s all about turn and burn insurance jobs for most shops now. Classic stuff is nothing but a headache for their less than qualified techs, cuts into their profit margin, and takes up shop space. Lather rinse and repeat all of my previous words for body shops.

There is definitely truth in that!

I had the windshield replaced in this truck and it leaked like crazy. I took it to the shop that did it and they blamed it on my truck, rust, old, etc. I told them that was BS and I wanted it fixed. The guy said the only thing they could do was pump it full of silicone. I then asked why they wouldn't do that in the first place and he just turned around and called a tech to come fix it.

No cost to YOU, but car insurance is Obummercare for everyone else. The people who don't make claims are the ones paying for your glass.

You're welcome.
