Getting axle ready for paint

I'm doing a full frame off restoration and I'm redoing the brakes right now. Do you all paint the back plate to your wheel and if so, what paint to use in it. Also sanding the axle so I'll use the same paint for this as well. I've heard a lot about POR15. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I like, use and recommend POR-15 but only when they're application instructions are followed pretty much as they're written. While the axle housing and most of its brake parts aren't subject to severe rust the attributes of POR-15 including tenacious adhesion to the substrate make it an excellent choice. For an axle housing I'd use an angle grinder with wire wheel to remove any surface rust etc.

Be sure to prepare and coat each part independently being careful to NOT cover or over coat holes or surfaces that need to be used during re-assembly. Don't coat anything already assembled (rear cover) as it will act as an adhesive making possible future disassembly difficult. This stuff can readily build quite a thick coating making holes ect difficult to use after it cures.

Rattle can black is perfect for the axle. I remember reading Por 15 can “insulate” the axle making it run at higher temps. Cheers

POR-15 is thick, so yes, it can insulate parts, impeding heat dissipation. Also, if you use it on something that will be exposed to sunlight, you should coat it with a topcoat.

You should also use something like POR's surface cleaner (degreaser) and prep (phosphoric acid) to prepare the steel surface for better adhesion. This should probably be done no matter what paint you're using.

I honestly don't see a high-quality coating or "paint" like POR-15 being such an efficient insulator it would cause a temperature issue within the axle center carrier or axle tubes. Sorry but that speculation sounds a but outlandish or old wives tale.

I agree with JWA, POR15 isn't going to insulate enough to make a difference. I don't know what Ford was doing in the 1990's but in the 60's and 70's the center sections were left with red primer and not painted black like the housing. I believe at some point they just stopped painting any of it.
