Oil leaks

Have a questions about valve cover gasket replacement- anything to watch out for/ keep an eye out while vavlve covers are off? They are producing an ooze that is slowly working its way down the motor.

Is it okay to pressure wash off these motors- anything to avoid spraying (besides things with +12 volts?)

Thanks in advance

Other than a visual, check the valve stems for tightness. As for pressure washing make sure engine is cold,if you hit the injection pump when engine is warm you could ruin it.I would recomend no water on it anyway.

What year is your truck? Does it run good?

If it's a 6.9 look out for broken rocker arm bridges. Not a problem on later engines.

Thanks for the replies- I'll check the valves and avoid spraying it off when it is hot- did not know that the pump was that sensitive! Learned something new.

Malcolm, its a 90 7.3 with a 5 speed. Was set up for high elevation according to the dealer, it came out of Colorado I guess. So it does not smoke- ever- I thought this unusual for a diesel but the dealer said it wouldn't be necessary to mess with the pump. Runs out with plenty of power, seems to carry a little more speed up the hills then my friends 6.9 that smokes like a chimney- also a 5 speed. Got 16 mpg on the way back so I am not going to mess with the thing, other then stop up the little seaps.

The stupid ZF is leaking from the case, where the back part of the case mates with the front, not the tail housing, and short of removing it to split it- well, anyone know if a ZF six speed drops in ?

Since MRZ mentioned smoking, during running I'm sure, he reminded me of a problem I'm experiencing. Okay, this can't be good. When I start my '92, 7.3 I sometimes see what looks like white to blueish white smoke for a short time. Is this a sign of a cracked head or block or something else peculiar to diesel problems?
