1999 F150 4x4 XLT hi does any one know the best or easiest way to replace a broken exhast stud on my triton 4.6 w/autotrans? tic, tic,tic starting to sound real bad. I hope not to take the engine out! help!!!!!!
Iv'e got the same problem on my 4.6. Pass. side rear stud. Very common on these trucks. To fix this you have to remove the manifold and if there is enough of the stud sticking out, you can weld a nut to it and then remove the broken stud. If not you have to drill and easy out with some heat, to remove the stud. I was going to tackle mine but I'm about to have dual exhaust put on, and the guy doing it has done several of these. For once I'm going to sit back and let someone else do it. That job doesn't sound like a good time!
I have the same problem on me 1999 f-150 5.4l, I thought It may be a cracked exhaust manifold, I ended up scoring a used one on ebay for $12 shipped!, but I wanted to know if any suspension has to be removed to get to the manifold.
Thanks acw and jason. I finally made it to FORD dealer. They're going to do it for me. About $300.00 for the stud removal, and about $800.00 if the stud breaks off, to remove the head. I hope it don't give future problems. Hey acw, is that true duels? I've got one flowmaster that splits into two pipes on my truck. sounds pretty good. I'm thinking of getting a fab-shop to make me a new cross member so I can have true stright duels.
800.00 to remove the head!?The guy that is going to work on my truck is going to charge $30.00 an hour.He has done several of them and he is expecting maybee 2 0r 3 hours to complete. The way he talks you would not have to remove the head. On the exhaust, it is going to be true duals after the two cats. He cuts the Y pipe behind each converter and runs them back. Im having him put on two generic type flowmasters, hope it sounds good.
acw, I didn't think of that. cutting at the y' pipe. I've got to go back and redo the exhaust. Now i've got to replace an oxy-senser. All n all it's been a good truck.
jim_jeb, I just got the manifold fixed. It ended up being both upper and lower rear studs. It took him 5 hrs then he did my dual exhaust. Total bill ended up being just under 400$. 190$ for the exhaust. He used two V force brand mufflers. Sounds good.
