Hey, I'm back! Haven't had a ford for a while after I sold my van. But I was driving one day and saw my new toy just sittin' there. 1978 F-150 Ranger /351m, Yay!
Anyway I've been trying to restore the entire truck to get everything working and I can't get the dash lights to work, the lights in the gear selector and temp control light up fine so it's not the fuse or switch. Then I found out that the flexible printed circuit board is in real bad shape, the bulbs are good but the contacts on the board are all shredded.
So anyway you guys know where I can get a new one? I don't want to hit the junk yard if I don't have to.
One more thing too, at night my lights (exterior and interior) pulse a lot at higher rpm, at idle it sometimes does and doesn't. I assume it's either the alt. or regulator you guys know which would be more likely to be the prob?
The only place I know of to get the circuit board is Hittin wrecking yards in hopes of finding a good Gauge cluster. I've got to where everytime I go and the cluster is out or ready to be pulled I'll check to see if the board looks good and ****** them.
Sounds like a junk yard trip is in order. Do you need the flex circuit or the plastic housing? There are a number of different flex circuits so make sure you get the right one.
The alternator sounds like it has some bad diodes.
i've got the same exact problem. the dash lights havn't worked since i got the truck about 4 years back. i've been knocking out my elec. quirks and thats next on list. the thing is mine blows fuses so its some kind of short or something, but the gear selector and temp lights work, so dont be sure fuse is good.
i got in mine and all that white plastic around gauges are all tore up. i wouldn't mind having that e-mail million.
Hey, I got it going. I had to solder some jumpers in place of the flexible circuit but she works!
Thnks to everybody who contacted me about getting another cluster, but as long as this fix holds out, I'm set.
You can get new circuit boards from aftermarket dealers for about $100.00 a piece, but like Torque1st said, make sure you know what you've got first. There are a lot of different options out there on the old trucks. Make sure you're getting the right one. Good luck with your repairs, and welcome back mrmoo.
