I need my right shoulder done. It's been "rebuilt" twice over the years. After looking at my last MRI, the doctor said he can't fix it. Needs to be replaced. I don't know what my best option is. My right arm is pretty much useless. I can't abduct or rotate.
I can't opt for surgery just yet. My wife had her first hip replaced in Feb and the second in July and it is now infected. She went back to the OR a couple weeks ago and has home health nurses 3 times a week for a wound vac and PICC line care. I've been trying to get opinions on the reverse shoulder from those that have it while I wait for her recovery. Can't have both of us down. Might be my only option anyway. Glad I saw this thread.
Going well as it can... pain has diminished considerable... now about a 5 when me or the PT guy moves me too much and about a 2 (like a dull ache) most of the time...Tylenol is doing the Tylenol stuff
PT three times a week and still no "active" stuff just passive movement...pendulum swings and pulley/rope lifting it, but the right arm is lifting the left are that way.. one month on Thursday... realistically I'm figuring March before I'm
70-90%... I'd like to drive the truck in our local Christmas parade on Dec 9 but honestly don't know if I'll be able to do the turns with one hand... The 'burb' is easy with one finger turns but the '53 is a little tighter
Ha-ha. If I'm good at tennis now after my new knee then my surgeon really is a miracle worker since I didn't play much before! Like the nurse said today when I walked down the hall holding my cane in my hand. She said "are you gonna do a dance routine?” My wife said, "if he can dance after his new knew then Dr. Cherry is a miracle worker because he sure couldn't dance before!”
Hang in there John. It will get better. Three weeks after my shoulder surgery I could drive to therapy but could drive my truck due to the remote shifter on the column. So one nice spring day I got my buddy Bill to take me for a drive in my truck. Not quite the same but it lifted my spirits.
I had reverse shoulder surgery three years ago. Working in the shop isn't a problem, but I will never be able to load or unload the dishwasher ever again. So there are limitations. The wife doesn't buy it.

i have the same problem with my knee replacement, oddly i can still load/unload truck parts ......
w
well, what else ??? last week was week 11 of physical therapy and all was going well... started doing exercises with 2=3# weights added and stronger flex bands..Could lift arm completely over my head...I was beginning to see some
progress...Had PT Wed and we did some new moves and I left there feeling fine. The next day around noon I started feeling some pain I hadn't had before and real pain when I moved the joint much. Doc did an x-ray and it was inconclusive. Recommended CT scan... That showed a nondisplaced acromial fracture where the collar bone meets the shoulder blade. (it's cracked) He said surgery won't fix and to back down on the PT. I feel like I've lost 5 weeks of PT work now. I'm back to doing passive stuff...pendulum swings and pulley/ropes raising arm just to maintain range of motion and prevent everything from "locking up". My PT lady said to keep it moving to the point of pain ...the therapy for "locked up" is a whole nuther ball game.
Disappointing to say the least but I got up vertical this a.m. so I shouldn't complain, although, My advice for someone thinking about this procedure has changed considerably. Anyone else have this problem after the surgery???
Hi John:
I needed a shoulder surgery, either reverse or complete. I left it up to the surgeon and his clinical observation after he opened it up during surgery. He chose complete replacement. He told me I would never have pain again. He was absolutely correct, never a pain since.
I had to wear a sling for a few weeks and then therapy. No weights, just stretching exercises. Very little limitation of motion, if any.
I am ready for the other shoulder replacement when the pain gets bad. Sorry you are having trouble, sounds like the pt is too aggressive.
Hang in there John, you're still ahead of where you were before the surgery. The therapy hasn't been a loss even if it's just educational value.
Stay positive - you'll beat this! How many set-backs did you go thru on your truck? and look how it turned out!
My pt girl is very conservative in her approach... warning me to stop when I feel pain... that's the problem... there was no pain!!
From what I read this is not uncommon with the reverse replacement and besides my bones are 76 y.o.
I think I'll burn another week of PT and see how much the pain reduces on it's own... then back to it
MT.... oh please Lord not that many setbacks !!!!!!!!!
John, I'm sorry for your mishap. I can't compare my shoulder replacement surgery with yours because mine was the anatomically correct implant. They say if there are other issues with the shoulder then they put in the reverse implant. So apparently you had some other problems with your shoulder and one of them popped up. I hope you can overcome this and have full use of your shoulder
I don't know if this will help you or not. I found exercising in the hot tub helped after both my shoulder dislocations. First time I dislocated a shoulder I did the normal therapy after the doctors had let my shoulder freeze up. I happened to go on a trip after 5 months of trying to get my shoulder functional and stayed at ahotel that had a hot tub. I discovered I could move my arm in the tub. I bought one and cancelled PT. The second dislocation years later I did not do PT. I just used the hot tub to gain movement. Recovery was much quicker even though I was 20 years older.
