I recently bought my Excursion (00, 4x4, V10) and love it! However, there is a bump or clunk coming from the front end during turns or over bumps. I have taken it my dealer, with no luck so far.
Any suggestions? Otherwise this rig really kicks!!
Take it back or to a different dealer. They should have checked the ball joints, the sway bar connections and shock mounts. I would bet it's one of those.
My new X (as it's called here) is a 4x4 Limited, with Leather heated seats (great in cold wx) and all the options. It has 42,000 miles on it and was bought new by a 71 year old man here in TN who trades every two years. He said he loves the truck, but it was time for a new one!! I truly love this truck! I just bought a 31 foot camper this week so it is about to go to work...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-May-02 AT 03:10 PM (EST)]Monsta gave you good advice. The sway bar is a good starting point to check, especially the end link on the drivers side where it is bolted to the frame. If you look in the drivers side front wheel well on the outside of the frame there is a bolt that holds the upper end of the link. If you see bare metal around the bolt the upper link may be moving and causing the clunk. Have you dealer tighten all the sway bar hardware. One other cause may be the cab mounts under the drivers feet. If loose they will cause a clunk under your feet that you can feel. If that is the cause they should be replaced as the bolts will strecth if over tightened and the clunk will get worse. I have 40k miles, and the ball joints are fine and this is on roads in Michigan, then again you're not sure how the old guy drove it. There is a TSB for ball joints in the SD pickups, if there is a wander problem. While your checking for loose shocks, just replace them if they are original.
Thanks for the advice, sorry it took so long to reply. I am in the Army and had to do a little field time. I will pester my dealer to take a better look. Again, thanks.
Another thought. If the previous owner installed a rear sway bar, check the links on the rear. If the rear sway bar is at an angle down from the vehicle it will load the front end and cause it to bottom out. it will sound like a bad ball joint or blown shock absorber.
If the noise or thump can be felt in your feet, have them check the body mounts. Sometimes they can slide and make a popping noise. They will do this even if they are tight.
