Anyone willing to help me get the tie rod ends out of the steering knuckles? I tried heat and pounding on the knuckle and tie rod and can't get them out.
I don't know what I am doing wrong. I live in the Renton Highlands.
Update: I got the pitman arm and driver tie rod out. Still can't get the drag link out of the passenger steering knuckle. Used PB Blaster, and heat but no dice. Second update: O'Reilley loans out pickle forks. Going to try that in the morning. And if that doesn't work I'll try heat followed up by the pickle fork.
Tie rod ends typically pop right out when the mount in the spindle is hit in the right place. A lot of times I've seen guys put a big hammer on the back while hitting it on the front. This guy has a pretty good method, too.
Thanks Wayne! Although the above won't work on a dent side. After spending a couple of hours with Mapp heat and a single BFH and getting nowhere slowly. Yesterday I jammed the pickle fork into the joint and whammed away about 20 times and it dropped out! Right tool for the job and all . . . Reassembly the reverse of disassembly and everything is connected. Except that I still have about 1/2 inch of wiggle between the pitman arm and the drag link and about 5 inches of play in the steering. So I should have replaced the pitman arm? It is what was worn out and not the drag link end? (sigh)
