Engine identification and possible swap

Can any one tell me what Detroit engine this is?
only photo and information I have at the moment sorry.
it’s in a 1980 Ford 9000

im also wondering if it would drop right into my 1988 L8000. It has the 7.8l Brazilian with a Eaton 10 speed manual.

thank you.
im waiting for more info on the Detroit truck vin# and what not.

Is that a Detroit 6-71 in-line six engine?

Looks like those were offered into 1986 for these trucks, so it shouldn't be too much work to swap it.

Since you have the donor truck there, you'll be able to get all the particulars needed to make the swap.

Is it a turbo motor? (They all have blowers, some have a turbo too)

thank you for your reply!
I don’t know much about it. That’s why I was trying to find out. Unfortunately I won’t get the truck it’s in, just the engine. The engine complete. Is there anything else I should ask for to make my life easier? Think I need the rad or anything?
here is the other photos I have right now.
I no nothing about diesels so your help is so awesome!!
maybe these photos will help to tell you what engine it is or if it’s turbo. I thought all diesels were turbo. I’m learning so much with this project lol
I haven’t gone to see it yet as it’s two hours away.
He told me it was running perfectly and then the transmission pto housing is damaged something about some sheared off bolts. ( not sure where or what the PTO housing is) will be googling it lol I know that would be a pain in the butt however I am a machinist. Will get a better idea when I can go see it.
the only other thing I can tell ya right now is it’s been sitting for three years.
all advice will be greatly appreciated!

So he just got back to me. It’s the bell housing separated a bit from the block and there is some broken bolts in the block.
he also sent me a couple more pictures.
are you able to get what engine from the vin#?

J = Detroit 6-71 N

No turbo.

You need the engine and everything attached to it IMO.

But really, you need a diesel mechanic to work with you. You're not going to get this thing transplanted without some help anyway, so find someone who spins wrenches on these.

Official name is 6-71 Detroit better known as a 238 for its hp rating
It’s a 426 ci two cycle diesel, it’s load, obnoxious, under powered and will mark its spot with oil stains everywhere it goes
It’s physically larger in size than the 7.8 you’re wanting to replace
It would be my last choice of engines to replace another one with
8.3 Cummins was the engine Ford replaced the 7.8 with

thank you for the info the more I can learn the better. I have to admit. Kinda depressing seeings how I bought it lol
really it’s all I could afford. It’s a solid runner and I only payed $1000 Canadian for it. The only bad is there are a lot of broken bolts in the bell housing. However, I’m a machinist and never been scared of a little work.

so I did buy it and I got it pretty compete as you recommended. I haven’t checked yet but pretty sure it will drop right in. It’s out of a 1980 Ford 9000 going into my 1988 Ford 8000L.
I will definitely get help though as you mentioned.

First thing is measure those cab support brackets from the top of the frame up to where the rubber mount sets, then compare that to your 8000
Some models have increased cab and hood height to allow more room for the bigger engines

See if a fan clutch drive is available for that engine and chassis
If so I would purchase one and convert it to fan clutch, then unbolt those shutters in front of the radiator and scrap them
In a test back in the late 70’s it took 16-20 hp to run a solid hub fan with the shutters closed, that was equal to a lose of 1-1 1/2 mpg back then, along with pulling hills one gear slower with the common 13 spd

could I just get away with purchasing an electric fan?

2 electric fans would work .don't run a DD over 190*
like stated early ,the 6-71 DD is bigger and heavier then the 7.8 ford diesel, and offers less power ,and worse mileage .and the DD is limited in rpms compared to the ford 7.8 .but DDs do sound great

So here is a couple things I don’t understand. When I look on line I see that the 7.8 has 240hp. Then I see the 6-71 has 238hp. So will the power be that big of a difference? Also, when you guys are saying the 6-71 is heavier. Any rough guesses on how much heavier? I should also mention that the truck will be mainly for personal use. Not a full time business or anything.
