I just got a 87 f250 460 it still has the stock carb and intake i was thinking about putting on a edelbrock 750 and an porformer intake. Will this get me more pulling power. I have a 26 foot travil trailer and need more power.
I had the opportunity to rebuild my 460. This was after I failed to check the oil on a long trip () and now check it just about daily in city driving and twice daily on long trips...
The new block got some goodies:
-Performance Cam and lifters
-Headers
I have a camper and tow either a quad trailer or my 4x4 (same pulling weight).
When I got the new block I noticed an immediate improvement in acceleration and pulling power especially uphill. I used to drop off from 110km/h to 60, now it's 110km/h to 90 on the same long steep hill.
The headers gave some of the improvement but the cam and lifters did the largest part. I had the option to go to a Camper style cam/lifters but these would not have given me the grunt I wanted.
Later on I replaced the carb with a Hollley 670 Street Avenger and it smoothed the engine right out; as it turns out the old carb was shot.
better way to wake up that engine is to change the timing chain to a straight up timing gear set (like from a 70 or older Lincoln, of course buy a new set though).
this helps improve the power more than an intake and carb change.
