I have a dilemma what to do with my 1990 Ford F250 7.5L Lariat 4X4 with a C6 transmission.
I was thinking when I bought it for $500.00 dollars and know it needed some work.
Known problems is:
1) Blown manifold gasket on both sides of the 460 engine.and not sure what trouble to replace gaskets or add headers.
2) The C6 transmission with no second gear, and just got a quote of $3000.00 dollars and have been driving it with a very strong engine that really not needing a second gear.
3) It needs a Paint job and the body is in fairly good shape.
4) That I did not know it only gets 6 mile per gallon and not sure what upgrade to make it better.
I will be 78 next month and I do have the money to repair the transmission, but not sure if I should be looking to get another truck or just keep what to get.
I got looking looking what a used trucks in the same class, would be better to make the repairs, but I still would have an old truck.
When I asked my wife what to do, she said ask my friends.
What should I do my friends?
If you get the transmission fixed you may move up to 8 miles per gallon. $3000.00 is a lot of money for a C6 to be put in, but that may be the going rate. Maybe find a local transmission place that can hopefully repair just what's wrong. There is a place like that around here that is the best transmission shop around.
They have put in excellent used solenoids in a Jeep transmission for me that were in perfect condition. The guy that had his trans built just wanted everything new in it.
There are still a few around like that, but hard to find anymore.
That truck looks good. If you have concerns about keeping it, you should be able to get a good bit more than you paid for it. The body sheet metal is worth waaaay more than what you paid.
It is not used very much, but do carry firewood and take stuff to the dump, and trips to get things that will not fit in my car.
Only need a truck a few times a year, but I do live on a small farm.
$3000 to rebuild a C6 is hilarious. DIY, it is just a very large three speed auto.
The leaking exhaust manifolds are not helping your fuel economy.
The exhaust manifold is holding me back as been told most likely have to drill broken bolts.
Most sure how to remove without breaking any bolts and could use some hints.
