A comment about Chips / Programers

I was a little apprehensive at first about programers and screwing around with something I have no idea about but...
I recently purchased a unit that had me monkey around with engine temp and things like that, then it had me choose either 87 or 92 octane. First try I left it at 87 and ran it. I had a change in power but not enough. Next (last night) I filled up with 92 and re-programmed.
Wow-that made a difference. I drove in this morning and had allot of fun with my newly found power. I recommend a programmer to anyone that's looking for a change and increased power---it's really nice.
I'm sure all brands do the same, so buy what you find affordable. One guy might tell you this ones better that one but all- in- all, you can't advance the timing any differently than the other guy. It's just without a programmer---there's no other way to do it.

Actually, all brands do not do the same thing. If you had to change the thermostat then you're talking about a Hypertech programmer. It actually gives less power than the competition. The competitor has 87, premium and no-towing premium (more performance) plus it includes a diagnostic code reader and works for more years/models for the same price. The Hypertech programmer does the bulk of its programming at wide open throttle.

oh no
I hate it when I don't shop things out well enough. Most of my life all I hear is "you should have..." But all that aside, I still like the product I bought and I recommend programmers to those who like change.
As for wide open throttle, I get that way when I'm barried to the door handles in beach sand. I hope it works out.

since we're on the topic, can anyone recommend from experience what they think the best chip is for a 97 4.2?

Try the "Chip's and Tunners" forum. I there they talk about the "Diablo" I guess that's what everyone likes.

We've been easily knocking off .5 to .75 seconds with 4.2L V6's with DiabloSport tuning.

I recenty bought the Superchips microtuner for my 4.6 V8. It has 3 setting and they claim 25 more HP for the performance tune. I can really tell a difference in performance and I also gained 2 MPG. I was also able to reprogram my computer to compensate for my larger tires and firmed up the shift points too.
