I'm looking to purchase the benchworks saginaw conversion kit for my 1979 F250 4wd 300i6, but have a question. I have a dual belt alternator, and the front belt spot behind the fan is where the new power steering belt is supposed to go. I called and asked benchworks what I was supposed to do given that I have a dual belt alternator, and the guy I spoke with said it's perfectly ok to just run the alternator on one belt and use the other spot for the new power steering belt as they recommend. Is this solid advice?
You would only need two belts on the alternator if you installed an alternator with more than 130 amps. Sometimes the Ford 3g 130 amp alternator can squeal at start up so they recommend two belts but a way around that is to install the '95 Taurus 3.8 v6 alternator because it has a reduced load at start up. In short, it's totally fine to use one belt.
If y'all wanted to see a visual of what my dual belt setup looks like... here you go. It's a replacement, but it's identical to what went bad beforehand, and advance's computer's said it was the correct part. I believe its only the 60 amp.. but it's a stock replacement either way. Looks like I'll go ahead and pull the front belt so I can install the Saginaw setup.
