I would say that if you have a 4x4 switch that you probably got a 4x4, look under the front of the truck, is there a drive shaft going to your front axle? if so it's a 4x4.
A 4x4 will have 2 drive shafts ont to drive the front wheels and one to drive the rear.
If you got a 4x4 but paid for a 4x2, consider yourself lucky!!
Thanks for the quick responce. I had just gotten off the phone with everyone at the Ford motor company to finnaly figure this out. I guess i should have done more research on this problem. Maybe you can help with the new issue i am having.
I just put my Edelbrock shocks on and torqued to the manuel specs and for the first couple of days no noise. Now everytime i turn Right i get a poping noise from the passenger front. When i turn left no noise. It also happens when going slow over bumps. I checked the shocks and they are tight. Could the one shock be bad? The front sway is also tight. i cant figure where it is coming from. Maybe someone has had this problem?
How many miles are on the truck?
I take it you had no noise before the shock replacement, if that is the case then there are a some things that may cause a popping noise.
Some are: bad hub, loose track bar bolts, warn sway bar bushings, shock, ball joints, axle shaft joints, to name a few.
Since the truck is a 01, I wouldn't think the ball joints or axle shaft joints would be worn unless there are some miles on them.
You could try to swap front shocks, just to see if the noise moves to the other side, that way you could eliminate the shocks.
The truck has 18,000 miles on her. I dont think that its the ball joints they look good. The sway bar is also in good shape. One thing i tried is while laying on the ground i tried to see if i could move the sway bar (on both sides with my feet) and the leaf springs and there is no movement. Ill try and switch the shocks this weekend to see if the noise moves to the other side. I do know that the stock shocks i had removed i was able to compress pretty easly. The track bar bolts you had mentioned where are they located so i might be able to check them out.
Just a thought, my new shocks came with a few different sized bushings.
Did your shocks fit nice and snug on the mounting bolt?
Also the track bar runs from the crossmember to the driver side of the axle, chances are, with only 18,000 miles, they are good.
The shocks i used were Edelbrock they only came with the bushings installed no extra. And yes they fit quite snug. I appreciate you taking the time to try and help out.

Good luck, hope it is something easy as a shock.
I'm leaving in a couple hours for my cottage, so if you need more info, Im sure someone will chime in.
I had the same problem. It was the right swaybar mount to the forward axle, the one on the passenger side . It has a clipnut nut,I wrench checked it and got almost a full turn out of it. Plus I could see evidence of the bolt head moving. This condition did not present itself with stock shocks, only after I had replaced them with RS9000's, And added a rear swaybar. I replaced them at the same time, so I don't know which had more effect on the noise. I would just like to point out that a visual inspection is not enough. I did this and missed it the first time. A wrench check on every bolt or nut under the front end would ensure all hardware is tight. Hope this helps.

Thanks JetFixr. Ok i have narrowed down the cause of the problem. The rear sway bar! I laid under the truck fro about 20 minutes checking everything out and nothing. so i decided to undo the rear sway and let it hang (with some rope of coarse other wise i would have been replacing the drive shaft) i took the truck out again and to my surprise no noise. So now the problem is how do i get the sway bar installed without having the noise re-occur. Could it be the leveling of the sway bar? maybe i didnt have it at the right angle? If Anyone has any suggestions i would be greatful.
