I replaced both window regulators earlier today. The driver's side has an issue when rolling up. The regulator "skips" a tooth, then continues rolling up. Then skips again, multiple times, but eventually makes it all the way up. It did this with the previous regulator also. When removed you can see obvious damage to the regulator teeth (on the large arc) where the skipping was occurring, so I figured replacing the regulators would resolve the issue. It did not. Almost seems as if the window has too much friction when trying to roll up. Any input on what the actual issue might be? If it's a friction issue, is there a property way to lubricate the rails/tracks to help with this issue? I don't want the new regulators to start looking like the old ones. Thanks!
wd40 initially works for me, especially troubleshooting. You can then use white lithium grease you can get in a spray can if you want the lube to last a little longer. Make sure if there are supposed to be little plastic wheels in the tracks, that they are in place and turning.
Thanks again. I used some WD40 without much effect, but I'll keep pressing with it (may just need some more) and the white lithium grease (I have some somewheres). There are no wheels/tracks excepts for the square follower in the track below the window attached to the regulator, and I greased that up pretty good on installation, but I'll check it again.
Another note: When I'm rolling up the window, if I push in on the regulator handle, it won't skip. If I roll it up normally, it'll skip several times, and the entire handle moves slightly away from the regulator during the skip and scrapes the regulator gear tooth.
Did you save your old #17? Can that be added in there to make the handle not want to come out and skip? Get in there and see where that outward play is coming from.
Yup, I still have all the old parts. I'll try adding that spacer. If that doesn't work, I'll take the regulator out and see if I can find the source of play. Not sure if the spacer will help, though, as the entire shaft moves outward, including the spacer/handle. Off-topic question ... any idea what the function of that spring is (#18)?
Spring 18 keeps the door panel tight against the handle. More than likely the spring pushes against plastic washer 17? The spring gives it a little friction so the window stays where you put it. And it makes it look nicer when the door panel is tight against the handle and there is no gaping hole showing behind the handle.
Yes, in certain places adding washer will make the problem worse. But see if you can figure out how to make the gear stay in tighter.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try to get the regulator out today and look at it, but if not, it'll be another week before I can get back to it. Stupid work.
