Need to get a estimate for some repair work. Already called the Ins Co. they are aware that I need repair work done.
So went to 2 shops for estimates, 1 gave a estimate, the other said they would need a claim number first before they would give me a estimate.
Been a while since ive needed to use a shop for repairs and never remember needing a claim number first.
On the other hand the insurance co. didn't give me a claim number when i called and seems to me that if it was a normal thing then wouldn't they have provided that to me knowing I would have needed it?
Is this 'needing a claim number first' before i can give you a estimate a new thing, or just something that varies by different body shops or what????
A close family member of mine has owned a body shop for 35 years and Around here , and everywhere else I’m sure, they want the number as proof the Ins Co. is indeed paying so they can estimate a higher cost. If you were paying out of pocket they would more than likely either estimate a somewhat reasonable rate (still high) or would be backed up and “not be able to get to it for a while”. Don’t bother asking though as they won’t tell you this obviously.
Same as doctors/hospitals, glass replacement companies, etc, etc. If insurance is involved it’s going to be milked the American way.
