We have a 1970 F100 4x4. According to the VIN and the seller, it has a 360 FE engine in it. Well, we dug in and pulled the engine this weekend and aren't sure. I have been trying to find the engine ID numbers that are supposed to be cast into the engine block, but I can't find them. Here are some castings from around the block. Obviously the big "352" has us wondering. Any help with this engine? Any pointers where to find the ID numbers?
It is probably 95% a 360. The FE 352/360/390 used the same block with cast 352 on the outside. You have to do a stroke test (measure bore and stroke) to confirm it. The 352's last year was 67.
Fords don't have ID numbers on the block. They have a base engineering ID number cast into the block which is similar to the base part number which is 6015 for an engine block. Ford uses a metal tag to show what engine it is which is bolted to the manifold. They can go missing if any work is done. ID numbers must be a Chimmy thing.
Nearly all FEs are cast with "352" in them, exceptions are "66-427" and "67-427". None of these castings tell you anything about the engine. Measure the bore and find the castings on the crank shaft. That'll tell you what the engine is.
Your block was cast on 0A21 = January 21, 1970 at DIF = Dearborn Iron Foundry.
