ACs don’t need flushes, per se. If they leak, yeah, you fix said leak and recharge properly.
You can hose the condenser off and get one of those combs to clean and straighten the fins, if needed. Letting that bad boy shed heat easier is always a good thing.
Sounds like a BIG scam IMHO if a "real" mechanic is recommending that!!!!!!!!!!!! IMHO, Do a pressure check 1st to determine operational condition.... and do that prior to adding any refrigerant!!!!!!!
Thanks for the replyies. No one has suggested a flush. I just want to get my ac to blow colder. I will hose off my condenser and have a pressure test. I really think the pressure is ok as it does get cool.....
Before you give a shop hundreds of dollars, get a can of R134 refrigerant at Walmart or the auto parts store and charge your system. If that doesn't fix you, you're only out $20 - $30. There's a good chance that's all you'll need.
A mod I've considered for my '07 and have done on my '77 is insert a "Ball Valve" to manually shut off the hot engine coolant flowing to the heater core during hot weather. Amazon has them with hose bibs made on them, brass bodies, stainless steel ball inside. I think it'll take 5/8" like these. I used two, one in each hose on my '77 but really one will do to stop the flow in hot weather.
Rent a gauge set from the parts store to check the pressures on both sides. Heck you could probably check pressures in the parking lot and return rental a few minutes later. Add "freon" if indicated. You can use the parts store cans with the gauges for that.
I have over charged a system before. My son and I put a completely new system on a truck a few weeks ago. While I had the gauges rented I checked the pressures on the car I thought was low and realized it was overcharged. Once corrected the system cools much better.
An overcharged system acts just like one under charged. Inconsistent cooling.

If the system is ever opened weather it’s for a leak or repair, I would consider replacing the receiver drier.
