limited slip install

How hard is it to install a limited slip or locker? I've been wanting one but I don't really have the $ if it's going to be something I can't do myself.

depending on what axle you are putting it in and what locker or limited slip you use, it could be really easy or really impossible. i know lockers that go in the stock carrier like powertrax are pretty easy to install, with hand tools.

Do a search under "limited slip install" or "locker install". I did one myself in an 8.8 a few months ago, it's not that hard, but I taught myself how with manuals and an instructional video.

i don't think he can install a detroit, and money is an issue it sounds like. and welded is hard to use on the street. and not that strong.

slifer, what are you using this truck for? that whould help us give you ideas of what works and what doesn't.

It's my hunting truck, but it will be driven around town a lot too. I'd like to keep the cost down, I'm not so worried about the price of the locker/ls but I just don't want to have to pay big $ for installation. So basically I'm looking for something to be driven about 50/50 on-off road, that isn't too hard to install. Thanks guys

Trach Tech, the Detroit locker guys have something called an EZ-locker that installs into the open diff in a simeral fashen to the PowerTrax but I haven't done an EZ-locker, but the PowerTrax is as easy as it gets. Without major adjustments and modifications your best is the EZ-locker, Lockright or No-Slip (also PowerTrax) the latter is more prices but would be quiter etc for a vehicle driven by your wife, daughter, or girl friend.

What are you talking about??? They make a Detroit for 8.8 cause I had one in my 93 F-150 I got it for $450 with install kit...did it my garage. http://www.completeoffroad.com/products/c-17.html

I can't even tell my rear is welded except when one tire chirps around a sharp turn.

Where do you get off saying lincoln locker is not strong? Mine has been through hell and back including School Bus, Gaurdrail, and helicopter pad at Tellico! If you do it right and know what you are doing it is strong as a spool

first off, i know they make a detroit for an 8.8, i never said they didn't, i only said that they are tougher to install, usally requiring setting up the rings and pinion, which is not fun. not impossible, but not fun. a welded rear is only as strong as a stock carrier, i know welded rears can work great if done right, but i don't think it is the best idea for a 50/50 street driven truck. powertrax lock rights are like 250, about half the cost of a detroit, and take maybe and hour to install with simple hand tools. now i am not going to argue with you about it, there is no reason to, i am giving slifer my opinion on what i think will work best for his situation.

Well, Im in the same delemia- Only Ive got a Dana 60, and the tools to do the job right. How hard is it to install a manual locker, versus an air or electric one? What is the essential differences in performance between the three? Ive got no issues with $$ for once (being in the military has its advantages) but I am rather restriced on time. Please let me know what the options are, besides welded. When you run tires that are large, the chirping gets worse and worse. I think with my 35's it would be hardly worth the effort, as I drive mine on the road quite often. Also, would it be worth while to upgrade or replace the axle shafts and berings while Im in there? Is there a kit for such a thing? Thanks,

Thanks guys, I'm leaning towards the ez locker. That's about all I'd want to spend, it's going in my $600.00 truck, plus I think I can install it myself. Thanks again.

ok, my bad i mis-understood what you meant then

detroits aren't that bad to install....they send you plenty of documentation and a video, it would be a great learning experience for him. I think he should try it. it is also a grand idea to have someone who has done it before standing next you.

IMHO, i don't think upgrading axleshafts is needed esp if it is a daily driver....D60's are already pretty tough. i might at least re-grease the bearings and check for wear.

on the installation....search, it has been discussed (esp for a D60) quite a bit on here and even more over on Pirate

I'm looking forward to learning how to do this, and a buddy of mine from work has done it before and said he can help if needed. I just have basic hand tools, I imagine I would need some specialty tools to install the detroit, right? That's the only thing keeping me from the detroit, I imagine after buying it I wouldn't have the money for tools to install it. Thanks again guys
