Hood scoop / air intake

Does anyone know why the intake has to have such a long pipe. I mean, why does it leave the throttle body and have to suck from another time zone.
I want to install a hood scoop and would like to shortnen the intake pipe so the air cleanner is centered with the engine. Is there a rule about how far the MAS has to be from the throttle body?

I cannot answer your question, but I would advise you to take great care in any redesign. In particular, you should be aware that the top of the hood is actually an area of high air velocity and therefore, low pressure. If you aren't careful, you could end up sucking air out instead of ramming it in!
