garentee you it was a diesel, the 17-19 fuel filter return line under the good breaks off, sprays fuel everywhere. Mine did that last year and in 3 miles i drained 15 gallons of diesel and the insulation on the dpf was smoking for hrs. Made a huge mess.
The 17-19 fuel filter kits started including a reinforcement clip to mitigate breakage of the one sensitive fuel line. They also started coming from the factory with that clip installed at some point (my 19 came with it). The reality is, a failure can happen in various ways. Careless fuel filter install, failure of a seal, or as we have seen before, the plastic filter housings sometimes springs a leak out the top.....that's assuming diesel.

That happened to me and my wife 130 miles from home. The top fuel filter cracked and sprayed diesel everywhere under the hood. A good samaritan saw my dilemma. He went home and removed the filter from his WIFE"S F250, and came back and installed it. Would not give me his name, address or anything. All I could say was thanks!
O-rings failed on my fuel filter (2019 diesel).....3000 miles after I changed it. Ended up spraying fuel everywhere. I was able to re-set the o-rings and it got me home. I then took some measurements and found an O-ring at ACE hardware that provided a better fit than the factory green and yellow o-rings.
