Anyone do this?

I was wondering if anybody took there cats off there 2.9. And in place put a straight pipe or test pipe. How much better did this improve sound and did you notice any performance gains. I would like to cause i dont want to make my truck run like crap but since the cats will need to be replaced and the quote the shop gave me was outrageous to put new cat back in. I figure it would be cheaper to just put a straight pipe in...I know it doesnt have the OB-D2 system or whatever it is called... and we dont have emissions testing here in Indiana

Sure, there would be a little better sound. Have you priced out a performance cat? You could do that and put on a glasspack as well and get good sound and be legal too.
