AGGGHHH, it seems to be a new issue for me everyday. I ordered a dual exhaust system(cheap) to replace the rusting, leaking headers and worn out mufflers. I replaced the stock exhaust manifolds and proceeded to install the duals. Well, the driver's side downpipe was a little short and interfered with the clutch fork mechanism. I didn't realize that the pipe was interfering and depressed the cluth, which didn't move much at all and scraped the top of the exhaust tube. So I pulled the exhaust back out and dented it to clear the clutch. So I pput it back in and it clears. I think all is well....well now my cluth doesn't have the same pedal feel that it had before. The pedal sticks halfway back when returning. I checked all of the springs and they look the same as before. What else could it be? Did I bend something when I pushed the pedal and it interfered and stopped against the exhaust? Any help would be most apprecciated! Thanks.
You may have bent one of the fingers on the clutch plate or even unhooked the T.O. bearing from the fork. I'd pull the inspection cover and try to look up inside and see. Check under the dash and make sure the big spring is ok.
Thanks for the info Barry. Well, I still can't figure it out. The spring under the dash looks ok as do the springs hooked to the fork. With the inspection cover off, all looks well. The pedal still feels weird and won't return when I depress it. Not only that it isn't engaging the clutch at all. I can't get it into gear. I wouldn't think that the fork could pull off of the T.O. bearing?
I would crawl under and watch how it works as someone depresses the clutch. The T. O. bearing is clipped on with 2 clips on the clutch fork. I've seen them snap off and the bearing sort of floats. It's strange that the clutch would go soft on you like that. if you can't get it in gear, I'd say your problem is with that pressure plate, providing the T.O. bearing is ok. I would pull the tranny back and really have a good look see.
What about the plastic bushing on the pivot bracket? There is one on the frame side as well as on the motor side. It might be that the presure was enough to shave the bushing down to where it will not pivot smoothly. You might even want to check to see if the bracket and pivot point that are mounted to the frame are all tight and secure. Because of the presure, the bolts might have come loose and the bracket may have slipped a little out of place.
Usually if the equalizer bar bushings are shot, you will get a rough binding feeling in the pedal. They probably are bad as 99% of them are, but it sounds like from his description, he has lost the stiffness you get from a mechanical clutch. Now is a good time to check all the bushings and replace them all.
