Hard Starting

It started once this weekend. I would try to start my 2000 X V-10, It would start but almost immediately die like it ran out of gas or lost spark. After the second time it finally seemed to take hold, ran rough for a few seconds and then smoothed out. Never was able to get it to do it again.....Until this morning, same thing but in order to get it running I had to keep my foot on the gas. It ran rough and then smoothed out and then no problems. Anyone have a clue what might be causing this? Is it the filter? Computer? injectors?
It is so intermittant I am reluctant to take it to the dealer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What color is the smoke coming out of the tailpipe?

My first thought is that 1 or more of the injectors are leaking down.

Also, the AIC valve seems to be a common culprit for sypmtoms like you described.

How may miles do you have on your truck?

Are there any other driveability concerns?

Does it only happen on a cold start?

I didn't notice any great amount of smoke, possibly grey if any.

39,500 miles +/-

Once it starts it runs fine. It took 3 tries the first time and 4-5 tries the second time it happened.

Yes, both times it was a cold start (overnight)

Where is the AIC valve? Can I check it?

Thanks.

Sorry I was a bit dyslexic...it is actaully the Idle Air Control Valve or IAC (not AIC, that's an Aux. Idle Control for diesel equipped trucks...)

Anyway...it is located on the back part of your intake manifold. I believe there is a two wire plug going into it that operates the solenoid. The valve itself is held on by some bolts. Take it off and inspect. There may be carbon build-up in it. Get some carb cleaner and clean it out to free up the plunger.

Many have reported that doing that or replacing it (about $85 or so with gasket) will solve the hard start. Try and clean it first, of course.

Is your truck equipped with an EGR system?

I can almost guarantee it is the IAC valve. Had mine replaced under warranty around 30,000 miles. Seems to be pretty common.

I have to confess that I don't know. I will check it out tonight.
Can I remove, clean and reinstall the valve without replacing the gasket? Or do I need to get a new gasket first?

Thanks.
