I need to replace the steering wheel in my 79 f150, it’s cracked from sitting in storage for so long. Bronco graveyard doesn’t have that steering wheel just the pad. Anyone have a good source for an oem wheel? Thanks. I’m also looking for a good source for a oem fuel cap. I ordered one from rock auto and it didn’t fit correctly
The 77 wheel won't work well on the 79 steering column. Different diameters where they join, I think the turn signal cancelling actuation is different as well.
You may have to go used. I have a few different wheels available that will fit your 79. A couple of sport wheels, a blue wheel that came out of a car, & a black wheel. No cracks!
You can fill the steering wheel cracks with epoxy and then sand and paint it. With something like SEM paint. You can source repop steering wheels from vendors $$$. Yes a 73 to mid year 77 is smaller in the center horn pad area and a late year made 77-79 is larger, like in the above pics. You need to source a 78/79 to get to reuse the center horn pad. The spoked one (top left in above pic) is a "Sport" steering wheel and are $$ for sure.
Thanks, in one of your links I found a place that offers the 78-79 wheel minus pad. The plastic on mine is cracked badly and missing pieces so it will work but I want it perfect.
Yes sometimes even trying to repair it is not possible. You want perfect then time to pony up some $$ for a repop. And even more $$$ for a good OEM. What about doing a upgrade to a padded sort of like leather wrapped one off a little bit later year Ford truck or Bronco or even Econoline Vans? Just be aware that you have an all spline steering shaft and some of the newer steering wheels have a alignment space/spline/flat spot. But a Dremel can remedy that.
I put a DC wheel on my truck 10 years ago . It’s cracked now like the original was. The steel rim expands and contracts with temperature changes and breaks the plastic.
For my 79 250 I purchased an 82 larger grip wheel on Ebay for 20.00 that no one else bid on. It was real spongy and had a few cracks. drilled small holes between finger grips and squeezed the dark Gorilla expandable glue into the holes. After it was dry, cut and sanded the expanded glue off,
painted 3 coats of SEM (20.00 a can here in Ala) black and looks pretty good for a 40 dollar larger grip wheel. Also, purchased the plastic horn piece from 77&79 F250
which I needed anyway. All worked out for me..
BTW, there is a U-Tube,,,, steering wheel repair that I got the ides from.

Reason: Added SEM paint cost.
Fortunately I have a heated/cooled shop and a heated/cooled garage for it so hopefully the new one wont crack like this one did. It’s from down south and sat for 30-40 years so I imagine heat got to it and made it brittle, wouldn’t be the first one I’m sure
