I recently hauled a 65 Galaxie on a flatbed. With the AOD and 5000lbs of trailer, she made it.... but that is the last time I'll flog the old girl that hard.
Thanks! Been at this one a while, did the initial teardown in August 2020. It was my mom's car when I was a baby and has been off the road since the 70's. We'll have had it 50 years on 8/1/2023, so I'm scrambling to get it wrapped up for its 50th anniversary with us, and Mom's really looking forward to getting the first ride in the finished product. I dubbed it "Project Plain Jane" because that's exactly what it is; a plain Jane base model 6cyl automatic. A "secretary's car." 89K original miles on it, had a 100% rust-free unibody. Only sheet metal parts I've replaced are the doors, everything else on it is what left the Ford plant in New Jersey in October '66. Sold new at a dealer in Nashville that no longer exists, but it's been a local car from day 1, and the original owner still lives about a half hour away from me, so he's been actively following the build as well.
Vary nice job and great story that it is still in the family.
There is nothing wrong with a plan Jane 6 cly / auto Mustang.
I was given a 67 fast back 6 cly / auto no power brakes or steering and it was the steering why I got the car.
The little old lady could not steer it and had a fender bender.
I had the fender & bumper and drove the car for a year or so till someone offered good money for it.
It did get really good MPG
