Hey guys had something pop up on my 2000 f350 CCLB SRW 285,000miles. Twice in the last week with no indication it just shut off like I turned off the ignition. First time I was in gear at a stop with my foot on the brake and just started to push the accelerator pedal. The other time I was in park after I recently started it up to have the AC run a little. Both time when I went to restart it, it fired right up with no signs of an issue, no CEL light. Could a failing CPS cause this? The one that is in there was replaced under a recall by ford when I got the truck about 10years ago. I keep a spare in my truck bc I’ve heard they can fail and leave you in a tough spot. Thanks for any assistance or advice you can provide
More likely the tin nut has gotten loose or the IPR wiring has started getting soft. I'd start w/ the nut, pretty common for them to get loose and fall into the valley. If so just hunt around w/ a flashlight it should still be there somewhere.
Ok time for some updates. I think part of my issue was low oil. Last week I drove about 30miles to Philly with a dump trailer to pick up one of my pieces of equipment. Nothing out of the ordinary on the way down. When I had the equipment loaded and ready to head home it cuts out. Will restart, no service engine light but im real hesitant to try using the truck again. I pop the hood and looking for the ipr to see if the nut is loose or fell off and I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. Out of curiosity I decided to check the dip stick. Sure enough it’s down at the add line maybe a hair below. I was surprised because I just changed the oil about 3000 miles ago and with no signs of an oil
leak didn’t think it would be that low. so I walked to the auto zone and grabbed a gallon of rotella. After that I thought I was out of the woods and drove home with no signs of an issue. Today I started the truck and when I first stepped on the accelerator it kind of bogged down/stumbled but then evened out so I figured I might not be out of the woods. I drove it about 10 miles for an errand and when I was coming home it died while I was driving. I put it in neutral, it started back up and eventually died again. I managed to get into a parking spot and checked the oil level. It was back at the add oil level again. I don’t have any signs of a major oil leak that would show 2-3 qts lost in such a short period of time. I don’t feel like I have excessive signs of blow by, and not a noticeable amount of smoke from the tailpipe. I put the rest of the rotella that I had in the truck and thought I would be ok getting home and would trouble shoot the oil loss but as I was driving home the truck stumbled a few times and eventually the service engine light came on. Luckily I nursed it home. I do have a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle but I’m having an issue getting it to connect to my FORScan to check the code. I’m leaning toward injector o-rings for the loss of oil? Would checking the fuel filter be my best first move other than trying to figure out what my stored error code is saying? I have recently (last year or so) felt like the truck has been lacking a bit of power. Injectors could be toward the end of their lifespan? My first post had a typo the truck is closer to 297,000.
Rain stopped long enough for me to get under the hood. I checked the tinnerman nut on the ipr and it’s in place and seems tight. I moved on to the fuel filter which was last changed about 25,000 miles ago according to my records. I pulled the filter and it definitely looked pretty fouled. I also noticed some flaky particulate in the bottom of the fuel bowl. I managed to catch some in a little cup and poured it onto a paper towel. I’m thinking it’s some biological material, not sure oil would flake up like that? So I’m starting to think my issue might be multifaceted. I still can’t get my Bluetooth dongle to connect to my FORScan so I ordered a usb obd2 connector so hopefully when that gets here I can check the codes with a laptop. I’m including some pictures
Yeah I'd bet that filter s the cause of your stalling, but what's the cause of the filter plugging like that. This is a 2000 1 ton right, I don't think any of those came w/ steel fuel tanks but you might double check. The steel tanks are known to delaminate and plug up filters. Otherwise may be looking at dropping the tank for cleaning and start some biocide treatments. What's the coolant reservoir look like any signs of oil or diesel there?

yes 2000 f-350. I’m pretty sure it’s not steel. I tossed a refrigerator magnet on it and it wouldn’t stick. I agree that could be causing the stalling a fuel starvation issues just wondering what the pick up screens look like if that much particulate made it to the fuel bowl. Still not sure what would cause the oil loss. Degas bottle looks pretty good.
Plus carry oil and check it regularly to get an idea of consumption.
yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. Probably going to need to drop the tank. Never really had an issue with the truck when it was at a 1/4 tank like some guys complain about.
the broken draw straw fix, now my fuel pump can sip it down to the bottom of the tank.... not that I would do that, but I won't run out of fuel with 15 gallons in the tank
Still can’t get my phone to connect FORScan so I bought a wired connection and connected it to the laptop. These are the codes that came up. The wastegate is disconnected/deleted so that is normal as is the air intake heater so they are expected. Maybe I should throw my new CPS on since I got a code for that? Is that EPCV code for the tube and sensor possibly clogged? I’ve never had it off in my ownership. I know some people run weed wacker line through it to clean it out?
With all those different codes stored and from the sounds of your description of woes, I would begin with making sure that all the power supply connections and grounds are corrosion free and clean. New power supply relays for the engine management system. Since you live in the rust belt, salt is extremely suspect to have invaded the wiring harnesses and other parts of the electrical system and is now showing it's ugly face.
Could that material in your fuel bowl be from the cap? They don't look like any microbes that I've seen, that usually looks like pepper. Like suggested I would definitely drop the tank and do the Hutch mod and if you can swing it time and money wise a fuel pressure gauge would be a valuable troubleshooting tool and will save a lot of time and headache. I have a permanently installed Isspro and wouldn't be without it.
Some updates on the issues. I haven’t had much time for trouble shooting but I replaced the fuel filter, cleaned out the fuel bowl, checked the oil level and set out for a test drive in the neighborhood. The truck seemed good, throttle was responsive and it didn’t cut out at all. I decided to stretch the legs a little further and drive up to tractor supply (about 3 miles away). I was pulling into a parking spot and it dies. Damn. It started right back up with no codes so I shut it off and went inside. Came back out and it started up again. Went around the parking lot once and it shut off again. Started back up and nursed it home without it shutting off. Got the laptop out and set up some PID’s for it to monitor. Here is what it showed. I’m not real familiar with what the numbers should be so if anything looks out of the ordinary, please let me know. Also if there are any PID’s that would be beneficial to monitor let me know and I can add them. While I was trying to set it up and the truck was just idling, the engine cut out twice. I also broke off the out layer of the old fuel filter and the inner filter looked pretty coated with oil so injector orings seem like they will definitely need to be done sooner than later. I’m also going to swap out the 10year old CPS with an oem one that I have in the glove box.
