Can it be reliable ?
I use my trucks to tow, but I don’t drive them much. Maybe 5k miles a year.. but when I go somewhere, I want the truck to run and not have issues.
As of now the engine is “healthy” but runs rough. Like weak injectors or Stiction. It also leaks oil from basically everywhere on the motor.
Shop quoted me about 11,500 to pull motor, reseal, studs, machine heads, lifters, oil cooler, and maybe some other small things that normally go with that.
we also talked about new engine and injector wiring harness for $1500.
$1900 for oem injectors.
how does that sound ? What would you do given the info you have. Part of me thinks for the amount of money I should just put a long block in it. I don’t mind spending the money it needs but I also don’t want to throw money away. I’m not worried about resale value. I probably over paid for the truck because I wanted it.. I’d like it to last me at least 3 years. I’ll probably bite the bullet and just buy a new one in 3-5 years.
Not a diesel but how I keep it reliable is by spending lots of money on preventative maintenance. I put in a reman engine a few years ago and did it myself for about $3,000 newer Diesels are crazy expensive to maintain
You just need to decide if you are willing to spend what it takes, nice looking truck, cost a fortune to buy a new one like it
IMHO, the 6.0 and 6.4 years of Ford diesels are to be avoided, maybe not "at all costs", but unless you're getting that truck for less than half the book value, I'd walk away and not feel bad about it.
