What do the illustrious members of this Forum suggest for a Fuel Filter kit for my 2022 6.7 ?
There seems to be a couple of different Part #s for the Motorcraft kits, but I noticed a few people on another site were suggesting Mobil, or other make Fuel Filter kits. I've decided to start doing my own oil and filter changes after a very disheartening experience at the local Ford dealer with the first oil change on my truck, and since I just went over 15k miles I figured I would change out the fuel filters as well.
Also, has anyone had any experience with the "SPE Fuel/H2O Drain"?
As always, any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.
I use motorcraft FD4625AA or FD4641 filter kits, identical filters in the kits, usually get them off amazon, just be careful that the seller is supplying genuine motorcraft products.
And, on a 22, manual calls for 30K fuel filter change intervals.
And, in case you don't already know, oil filters are FL2124S, have 4 coming from amazon, least expensive I could find, $16.49 each.
Any idea what the difference is between the 4625AA, and the 4641? I also found a FD4625AA 1X, and a FD4641 1X.
I wonder why they would have different part numbers if they're exactly the same? Maybe it's just to confuse people like me. Not hard to do BTW.
version 1 had a potential crack in the small return line
version 2 included a collar for subject return line connection to give it strength.
version 3 has a change to help prevent the top center of the plastic in engine bay filter from cracking as the filter gets full. This version does not have the collar.
i had to buy a filter yesterday becuase my version 2 filter cracked at the center and was basically a fuel water foulntain. I went to buy a version 3 filter and was told they have to give me version 2 until supplies are exhausted. I told him I’m currently stuck on the side of the road a few blocks from here with a version 2 and I want a version 3, the latest and greatest…according to him.
i might have been con’ed so here is a pic of what was supposed to be a version 3 filter.
and, don’t but this filter any where but from ford. Ford caps the center output connection to prevent contamination. If you buy the filter somewhere else…it probally will not be capped and you will have to flush it before connecting it.
dont for get to cycle the ignition on and off 6 to 13 times to get all the air out
I should also mention that my version 2 engine bay filter cracked with only 3k miles on it.
after I replaced it with a version 3, I tried to blow thru my version 2 filter and it was 100% clogged. The dash had no codes and my idash does not have an option to monitor lift pump pressure.
I’m going to put in a sensor and pressure guage .

I guess I'll be buying the FD-4641 1X version since that's the latest and greatest.
4625AAA and 4641 have the exact same filter cartridges in them, the 4625AA kit comes with the little plastic support piece for the underhood filter, which you won't need, but sometimes you can get them cheaper, so I get whichever ones I can get cheapest.
I do not buy from the dealer, super expensive, but buy from amazon sellers that are actually selling genuine motorcraft.

^^^^ Bingo. Honestly for the 2017+ trucks there aren't a lot of options for aftermarket filters from reputable brands. Fleetguard and Donaldson don't even offer cross references, Wix and Baldwin do. Doc's is another brand I have seen, they claim their secondary filter is 3 micron (OEM is 4/5 depending on source) but is moot on their water stripping efficiency. That said, I have only run motorcraft and that is all I plan to stick with, some people have had issues with the plastic secondary filters cracking, I have not had that issue yet.
Motorcraft and only Motorcraft, OR upgrade to the new SPE which eliminates the water fountain underhood filter altogether and replaces the tank side water separator housing with a machined aluminum one that accepts standard spin on filters which broadens the choices and quality of the filters. I want one for mine, but have not seen an install of one yet for the F-450 where its located at the rail in the middle of the tank.
How can you verify if the seller is selling genuine Motorcraft?
About all you can do is see that they claim it is genuine, shows a genuine motorcraft label and their reviews don't say they are fraudulent.
Then check what you get very carefully for correct part numbers and Ford logos on the filters.
If not, send them back.
That is the second biggest advantage of a Prime membership, ease of returns.
Got the 4641 kit at AutoZone. It was $70 today. Installed myself on my 2018 Lariat .... Easy peasy.
Dealers wanted between $190 and $360 to do the same. So I saved a few $$$. Took about an hour which included reading the handy instructions included in the box.

I like that kit but doesn't solve the issue of the engine mounted filter.
They also make an engine mounted filter kit to go with that. Personally, I don't care for the 10 micron (oem spec is 5) filter HS uses on their engine mounted filter kit.
