Got a 68 with 240 CI. It might run 100 miles with no problem, maybe 5 miles, then it acts like it's ran out of gas. Let it get down to 10 or 20 MPH and it starts running again, but won't accelerate back up until it dies completely. I've changed the rubber fuel lines and filter on the fuel pump. The tank was supposedly cleaned out. The filter on the fuel pump is on top, does that matter? Any place to look beyond the tank again? Thanks
It might be electrical. If it sputters while it dies, then it is a fuel problem.
If it just dies, and maybe cuts in then back out, then it is electrical.
Check your points, and consider replacing the condenser, points, cap and rotor. If it still does it, try replacing the coil as well.
If you think it is fuel, pull the filter and blow reverse through it. If you get a lot of crud, you have found your problem.
Hope this helps.
