Hey Guys! I have owned my '01 Expo Eddie Bauer for 8 mos. It has the 5.4L. Since I have had it, it has always had a noise that is best described as a small manifold leak. It sounds loudest just as the transmission upshifts into overdrive at about 43mph. If you give it enough gas for power but not enough to downshift, the noise becomes very pronounced. I have learned to deal with this one, seeing as the dealership says it is normal.?. Anyway, recently, the car has also started pinging. It sounds like the V-8s of old that used to have knocking valves. Anyone else here of these noises in the 5.4. I wanted to ask the real expersts here before the guys at the dealership misdiagnose the problem, if there is a problem. The pinging noise is most noticable during interstate cruising. As you go up a small incline and give it just a little gas, LOOK OUT! It begins to ping pretty loudly. The Expo has 50,000 miles and is on its original set of plugs. Could this be part of the problem. I have already done an injection cleaning, didn't change anything. HELP PLEASE!?!
My two cents: Sounds like inadequate EGR flow. Has the check engine light come on? I'd check to see if the EGR passages in the intake are coked up. And maybe test the DPFE.
I've been having that issue as well, could the inadequate EGR flow be a problem without the check engine light coming on? What's the best way to cleanup the carbon junk??
My check engine light has never come on. I will definitely see if there is an inadequate EGR flow. I was thinking of replacing the spark plugs, any ideas on that thought? There is one problem here, I am not much of a brain when it comes to working on engines, and I am afraid of causing ten problems while trying to correct one.
That is a good question, and I have no idea. I think I may check that. I don't know exactly how to get to the plugs, but I have a buddy who is pretty handy, I will get him to have a look. I'll let you know soon
