It is like a mile north of me. I am at Shields and the 168 FWY, and he is on Ashlan and Cedar. He says it runs rough because it needs two coil packs, and the past due registration is $900. But, when he found out I was a veteran, he said he would lower the price to help with the tags. I want to see it first, but I am sure I will buy it unless there is something major wrong with it. He states the AC blows cold. a plus here in Fresno.

I'm almost afraid to ask, how it worked out.
I didn't know it was a 4x4. It is very dark green. Looks black from a distance. The AC does not blow cold like the ad states, but it does start right up. It runs rough, but not so bad it wants to die. The owner says the coil packs are up to $100 each at AutoZone, but if you buy them on Amazon (CarParts) they are $51.99 for a set of 8. He has been driving it for 3 weeks. He bought it from a tow yard. He also lowered the price for me to $1,500 to help with the back taxes. I am praying that when I go to the DMV on Monday, they will cut me some slack on them. No major body damage, interior is fair, and it has a cheap no name brand AM/FM CD player. Already checked with Geico and for the state minimum coverage, it will only cost me $45 a month. as soon as I can afford it, I will upgrade that to full coverage. For now, I need to get the coil packs, then install them myself (not sure I can reach the back four) or pay someone to do it. I asked him if he could keep it there until Tuesday so I can go to the DMV on Monday and find out how much it will cost, and if I can get a temp permit to allow me time to get it smog tested. He said that was fine. I will need to find someone who can drive me over there as the bed is too high off the ground for me to lift the scooter into. The VA has already approved putting a hoist in my truck, but that was when I thought I was getting the Tundra. So, I don't think there will be an issue with them approving a Ford F-150. It even has over half a tank of gas in it. It has the Triton 5.4L V8, auto trans, and cruise control. After I get it legal, my number one priority will be getting the AC working.
I have the bill of sale, and he also gave me the paperwork from the tow yard he bought it from. I also climbed inside to see how difficult it would be to get in and out. It doesn't have power seats, but it has power windows and door locks. After pushing the seat all the way back it was a lot easier to get out of.

Mechanically, that generation of trucks had a lot of problems with the engines. I won't bore you with all of it, but you could read all about the problems. Chances are good that it won't be a simple fix, like coil packs. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum24/ https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum48/
If the truck was decent, they could sell it to a car lot for immediate cash. Or get upwards of $10,000. It just doesn't seem right that they are only asking $1,500, and lucky you, he is offering a discount.
I read the paperwork that he gave me, and the paperwork from the tow company he bought it from. The last time this truck was registered was December of 2010. Which means an 18-year-old truck has only been legal 6 years. I have already sat in it and turned the engine on. It does not sound bad. Yes, it doesn't idle as well as it should, but I could have driven it home had I not gone there on my scooter. The scooter is way too heavy for me to lift up into the truck bed. And the man who sold it to me was suffering from gout, so I was not going to ask him to help. Besides, my apartment complex does not allow vehicles on the property with outdated tags. Which is why I asked him if he would keep it for a few days. They (my apartment complex) have hired a tow company to do random sweeps thru the complex, and they tow vehicles that have expired tags. They do give a 3 day's notice of tow, but that would not be enough for me to come up with 12 years of back due fees. I will see if I can get a friend to take me up and get it but want to find out how much it will cost at the DMV. I have already BOUGHT the vehicle so no amount of "what to look" for videos are going to do me any good except add insult to injury. Jim
I think your going to come out on top with this deal.

Other than not being washed recently, it looks like the only thing missing from the body is that rubber/plastic piece below the bumper, and the small grille above the bumper.

It has dirt and bird poop on it, but not enough to lead me to believe it has sat for 18 years. I don't know why it has 12 years of no registration, but I sure wish that person, or persons would have put it on a non-op. According to the tow company paperwork (lien sale) the truck came into their possession April 3rd of this year. And the registered owner lives in Ontario, California. however, the legal owner has a PO Box in Fresno, California. Cosmopolitan Fin, which after doing a Google search tells me it is Cosmopolitan Finance Company. So, maybe they repossessed it after nonpayment, and made the mistake of parking it on the street? I don't know. In any case, the truck was bought by me, and I will find out tomorrow from the DMV how much I will have to pay to get it legal. I did some Craigslist checking and this truck is indeed worth about 10k. And the seller said he was barraged with calls regarding it, but that nobody wanted to buy it after finding out how much the back fees were. Except of course, for yours truly. And even I said, "no thanks", after hearing the amount, but then after thinking it over for a while changed my mind and called him back to see if I could see the truck. I paid him on the spot and am now working out the details to get it legal, and moved to my place. Think about it. $1,500 for the truck, $900 for back fees. $100 for a smog test. maybe $200-$300 for coil packs, spark plugs and labor, and I have a $10k truck for $2,800. Of course, that does not include getting the AC fixed, but even if that turns out to be a $500 job, I am still getting a great deal at $3,200. I could flip it and buy that 2001 Dodge Dakota in Livermore for $3995 that I was saving my money for. However, like the old saying goes, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". So, I may be too optimistic at this point, and there may be other hidden expenses I don't know about, but I will just take it one day at a time. I honestly don't think there is any mechanical problem that would cost more than 10 grand to fix. If there is, I will throw in the towel, as that would be way beyond my ability to pay for it.
