I have a 86 f150 5.0 efi and it idles and runs great until it gets to 160degrees then it dies when put into gear sometimes it will idle in gear but acts like it chokes when gas is pressed
See the link in post #11 in this thread, seems to be a few issues with this type of truck lately, It's a long video, but he shows the issue in the PCM/ecu.
86 f150 5.0l brand new engine has correct fuel pressure. Why would it idle good in gear when cold. But as soon as it warms up to normal it dies almost immediately after putting in gear. Sometimes will idle for a few seconds but when I press the gas just say In drive it'll choke. I have replaced iac and tps both check out correctly
When cold, the engine management system is in open loop. The fuel and ignition are controlled using a predetermined set of parameters. As it warms it switches to closed loop and manages with feedback from the various sensors. It is quite possible that a sensor providing bad feedback could be detected by pulling engine codes.
That said, since you just dropped the engine in, did you hook up all the EEC related ground wires? Most notably the grounds landed at the rear driver's side of the intake manifold. The black wire from the EEC directly to the battery negative post is often overlooked.
