On my 98 5 speed the shift **** decided to take itself off. If it is the same, it is held on by plastic splines and epoxy. And as far as putting on a custom shift ****...you can make anything work anywhere. (With a little modification 
)

Welcome to FTE maticuno,
You should be able to pull off the snap "shift-logo" plastic cover on top + be able to unscrew the nut (I think, haven't done mine yet)!
Shop around for an after market ****, w/ the tiny set screws, + replace it.
