Smile Hello from Eastern WVa

Hello FTE,

For me, I feel like I know a bunch of you already. I have been following along on a few builds for a while now.

I previously owned a 1958 Ford truck. Bought it, thought about it, then sold it a few years later. At the time, I was a bit younger, and I was still serving on Active Duty. Didn't really have the time or the energy, to do what the brain desired.

Fast forward more than 20 years later... and I still have the bug to fix up an old Ford. I am in the very beginning stages of this new journey. I haven't even gotten a truck to work on yet. I want to be completely sure that this is what I want to get into. My desire to restore an old truck has never left, I only fear that my skills may not be there. I want to build a truck, not buy one.

So, research is what I have been doing so far. I do know for sure that I will be doing a 1956 Ford F100. There are many reasons behind this choice, and I will explain them once I begin an actual build log in the future. As far as the modifications that I would like to do... they are numerous and my vision changes frequently. Every time I learn something new with regards to restoration, I think ooh... I want that too!

When it comes to auto repair/restoration, I am completely out of my comfort zone. I have zero experience with this new hobby. For now, I am saving up some money to begin purchasing some of the tools and things that I can begin to learn on... Welder, Motor Lift, Jack Stands, etc.

My near-term goal is to purchase enough items to build a motorcycle trailer. This trailer would be a small Ford 50s style step-side bed. I think that would be a great place for me to start this journey as it will give me a great project to practice and learn on. I feel that I would want to extend the bed a bit which would require a bit of fabrication. I would also need to make modifications to a frame. In the end, I would want to see how my painting skills are and if everything turns out as envisioned, I will then sell the trailer and use that money to jump start my truck build... Unless that perfect, ready to restore, 1956 comes up in a classifieds near me... and for the right price.

In closing, I have been retired for a couple of years now and have relaxed long enough. I will be wanting to get involved with the local community as well, so anyone in the area, I will always be open to having some extra mentors and friends around.

Jason

Thanks. Applied with them about 30 seconds after this post. It's like a whole new world once you register with FTE.

EDIT: BTW, I can't PM yet, however, my wife is from New Castle originally. I am in northern DE frequently. Her brother lives just a bit south of Dover as well. If you ever need parts along the I 70 corridor, let me know, I can trailer them for tolls and a bit of gas money if needed.

My advice: Don't plan too long. Find one and dig in. There are plenty of people around that are happy to answer questions!

Welcome aboard!

Fantastic Friday and 2 June Jason. You are a WV Chapter member.
Welcome to FTE and glad you are enjoying the Forums and be sure to drop by the chapter and chat with everyone. You DO NOT have to be a Chapter member to post in the state chapters and with that said, drop in any of the chapter you may have any kind of association with because everyone wants to hear from you!

Was able to get a reprint of the Shop Manual. Now I just need a truck!

Not a truck, but cool none the less.

We have dogs to get home to, but next year will be an overnight trip for sure!
