At 43-44mph I get this pretty significant...shimmy. But not from the steering wheel. I can feel it in the floor, the cab, the seat. Once I hit 45+, its gone. Smooth. Its only at 44mph. Gets worse up a hill. Kind of feels like its bouncing up and down.
Just had tires rotated and balanced. Still there. Shimmy was also there with my studded snows on separate rims- so its not the tires. Wheel alignment was done a few weeks ago and its all in spec.
Carrier bearing? There's not much movement. About as much as you'd expect from a rubber bushing.
I think you're correct to assign your symptoms to something not frontend related, that all reads like something drivetrain. Any chance you dinged your driveshaft?

Drive shaft has the typical New England rust, but no signs of damage or anything.
Take the shaft out, maybe you find a worn u-joint, and have it balanced, $50 of piece of mind (ujoint extra). I had one toss a 1" chunk of steel balance weight and it had a small vib, that ended up taking out a u-joint. Should of listened to my butt and the shaky pass seat and got that fixed up.

yea, I'm going to call at lunch to see what it costs to have a shaft balanced. $50 to have one balanced? that's it? if so, I'll have that done.
Yea, I ordered a carrier bearing jobber. In neutral, there is a little bit of play there. not a lot, but enough to think that may be the issue. u-joints are rusted, but no play. we'll see what happens.
I'm very skeptical it's the carrier bearing. I'd first suspect u-joints, transfer case or rear end. Or an errant d/s weight.
Is transmission mount collapsed?
d/s weight is also up there in reasons. If its not the carrier, the drive shaft itself is going to get looked at. $400 for a new one with all new ujoints, but there's a driveline shop about 30m from me. If the bearing isn't the fix, I'll call them on getting the shaft balanced vs a new shaft.
Long story short, ordered a center/carrier bearing that ended up being the wrong part. There's two sizes for the mounting bolts. and me being the idiot that I am, found that out after I had pressed the new bearing on. in a fit of joy, I tore it out and dropped the shaft off to get it all set up. new ujoints, bearing, and balance. getting it tomorrow. the weird thing is, he said the rear part of the shaft had two factory weights welded on top of each other and that was causing it to be out of balance. wonder if that could have been it. we'll see tomorrow.
Sounds like diff. Maybe spider gears or side gears. Maybe ring and pinion problem like a chipped tooth or.... ?
I'd pull diff cover based upon that noise.
sigh...
it just doesn't end for me. I think there's been two days in the past four months I haven't had a wrench in my hand working on my vehicles. just one thing after another.
I'll pull the cover I guess. The fill plug is on the side and I'm doubtful that's going to come out with all the rust and corrosion. I'll have to see if they make a standard cover for the rear with a plug built into it. I see these fancy $450 ones that I'm not buying.

ffs. every day. something new.
If you can figure capacity you could try to fill thru the tone ring pickup, although there's still a small screw up there you risk snapping.
You could even pull a shaft, tilt the housing and fill a tube. Once back to level if gear oil just dribbles out of the spindle you're probably near perfect.
I'd kinda be curious to know current fill level but if you can't get the fill plug out, that's moot.
Don't jump into a bunch of work you don't wanna do on my say-so. I'm keyboard quarterbacking from afar. Maybe seek more opinions. Maybe others will chime in. Maybe try a different forum......
