I have a set of non split rims sitting around and was wondering if any of you can recommend a 33 inch tire that's not to Wide? Thanks!
What diameter are your wheels? If they are the 16.5" you options are pretty slim. Only a couple brands still make this diameter. A lot of folks end up going with the military takeoffs, but they are pretty wide. If you're lucky and they are 16", that will open up more options.
Well I got a line on a complete 400m with a set of headers for $25 bucks. Thinking of throwing the headers on the 351 for now as the stock manifolds leak badly and might as well throw some good sounding exhaust on it anyhow! That'll leave the truck as a driver while I figure out what to do with the 400. Now I'm toying with building mildly built 400, rebuilding a 460, or putting a turbo 7.3 idi in it. To many decisions haha
The difference in cost to build a 400 or 460 is negligible. If you have all the accessory brackets, I'd lean towards the 460 but you will still have extra money tied up in different headers, mounts, etc. Plus, while it's not necessarily needed, I would be inclined to run a full 3/8 fuel line from the tank to pump to carb if I was running even a mild 460. That would be a little extra work and cost since you currently have a 5/16 line.
For what it's worth, I built a 400M for my '79 F150 back in '08 and was really happy with it. It had stock heads, Edelbrock Performer cam, carb and intake. I also tossed in a new timing set and set the valve timing to 0 (factory on the Modified engines is retarded 4 degrees). It idled great, made plenty of vacuum and zero issues getting on the freeway and would light the tires up if I felt inclined. I actually swapped the gears in that truck from 3.50's to 2.75's for a while and it ran awesome on the highway.
Anyways, the choice is yours and everyone will give you their advice BUT my advice is backed by my experience and not just what would sound cool.

The spare set I have are 16's luckily.

Nice! I'll look into those, I have a set of 285/75r16s on a different truck and they are pretty skinny as well but around 31 inches tall.

Thanks for the info! I've heard those mods on the 400 do wake them up alot. I've got nothing but time to build the 400 as the 351 runs great so I'm all ears. I work as a diesel mechanic by trade so the diesel swap was also an option as that's what I know haha But yes, alot more work and money to do that!
Well nothing really cool to report lately. Last weekend I bedlined the bed and installed a new license plate light. Still gotta pick up the 400 and get it on the stand to see what I wanna do there.
Hey sorry I never replied! Been off the forum for awhile without checking in. Thanks for the advice and the links to parts! I'm hoping to pick up the 400 this week.
Howdy folks! Got another question, the big ol brass radiator in this truck started spewing out of the core. Anybody recommend good replacements? I've had bad luck with having them repaired so I thought about an aluminum upgrade. Thanks!
With the 400 refreshed, everything bolts up. With 460 you'll need a bunch of brackets and exhausts besides motor mounts. With 7.3 you'll need even more.

A lot of guys use Champion radiators. Honestly haven't heard anything bad about them. I still have my stock radiator in my truck and have an original brass 4 core in the garage for when the stock goes out.
Howdy folks, not much to post up lately but I have been working on the interior and got some new rims to get rid of the old split rims. Need some new tires but it beats what was on there haha Interior just needs some carpet and boots reinstalled and that'll be done for now. Next steering and brakes!
