Starter - thoughts?
Got a 1997 7.3 OBS that does not like to start. Got brand new batteries, and she will almost fire up, puff out lots of smoke, and seem like she's going to run, but will never start and stay running. If by chance it does start, it will only run for a second, then die. Will only start if jumped, and runs fine once jumped. Thinking that the starter is too worn out to turn it over fast enough, although it seems to be functioning fine. Truck is at 268K, and have no history on it.
What do y'all recommend at this point? Could it be a wiring problem, or should I go for new parts? I have heard good things about the gear reduction starters, but wondered if it was necessary.
First try to connect two large posts from GP solenoid with an screwdriver, for about 30-60 secs.
If starts or tries to start better, issue is for sure in GP system.
Since it started on jumped, go through this on cleaning first

Yes on Knotty's thread. I will add, plug it in for a few hours and see if helps.
A fresh starter is never a bad idea. Most upgrade to the late 7.3 SD style at minimum.
