Engine identification

I have just acquired a very nice 1950 F-1. It is stock except for the engine which I have been told is a 302. My quesion is: How do I determine what year it is. I don't know where to locate the serial number or block casting number and once I do then how do I identify it? Thanks

I don't have my reference book here, but on the block above the starter you'll find a number something like D7TE - XXXX

This example would be a 77 block. C for 60's, D - 70's, E - 80's, etc... Second number is the specific year in the decade the part began production.

Basically all 302 blocks are the same. They changed the imbalance factor in '81 and went to fuel injection in '86, but the blocks are the same for all practical purposes.
