I have an 87 351w with a 4bbl. I noticed today that when the truck starts up it is blowing this black oil out of the exhast. The tail pipe was near my car so it was all over the side of my car. It doesn;t smoke or appear to be loosing any oil. it smokes a little when I first start it, like when it is cold out, but when the motor warms up it goes away. any suggestions on what it could be. it has 140,000 miles.
Definitely running rich. Since it's carbuerated, there could be a lot of things causing it to run rich, there all kinds of adjustements on the carbuerator that effect the fuel mixture (a blessing and or a curse depending on what you're trying to do with your engine).
Hopefully someone on here can give you some info on tuning the carb, because I've never been very good at getting them to work right
I have however had a lot of experience with fuel injected engines, and based on that experience I would reccomend replacing the oxygen sesnor. It's possible you still have the original O2 sensor, and at 144k it's time to get a new one. On EFI's the O2 plays a major role in fuel mixture (in other words, passing the emissions test or not )
