I got a parts pickup with my 62 and it has a 262 I6. I dont know much about this engine and would like some input about it. I did a search and didnt find a lot, but it seems that it was used in bigger ford motels. I also know that it looks very similar to the 223. Is there an easy way to tell the difference? The guy who i bought them from said it was a 262, but he could be wrong.
If you can take the engine apart enough, the 223 has a timing chain where as the 262 has timing gears...Not to say someone couldn't have run across a used one and bolted 'er up!
As far as I've ever been able to tell, the 223 is the only one used on light duty trucks. Almost every application chart I've seen shows the 262 available only on the F-500 and above, plus the C-series "Cab-overs". Boy, I'd hate to see a cab-over with one of those, it'd probably be a dog :-(
I "decoded" the serial numbers. They match to a 223, so thats another reason im leaning towards it. At some point in time i will be switching the trannys between the pickups. The one in mine is really worn out, so i will be able to tell then.
