Ok, is it possible, if the heads were swapped from side to side, cause problems? Could it knock the valve timing off somehow? The engine barely has 500 miles on it

I'm pretty sure that is OK on FE's, but someone who knows might chime in.
I would think if it ran strong for 500 miles, then cam timing and the valves we're working correctly. I guess there could be a question if you have sticking valves after all this time, or if you have lifter or lobe damage, if that first 500 miles was not broken in correctly

It was broke in correctly for sure, when I took it apart and changed the head gaskets about a month ago just to freshen it up, I may have gotten the heads mixed up and not put back where they came off, kiddos distracted me, I know they can go on either side but after being ran for X amount of miles, do they need to go back on the same side? And it needs an exhaust, I’m doing this on headers only, does it need the back pressure to get correct tuning?

The Fe's have no L-R heads. As far as I know no Mfg. has any from this era.

From what this tread has said the dizzy could be 180 out. Pull it out and rotate 180 and give it a go.

Yes. Everything you've described sounds like regular old really screwed up timing. I wouldn't worry about anything else. Get the distributor in the right place, double check the wiring, and it will likely be fine.

When you had the heads off did you check your balancer to make sure it agreed with top dead center? If not, it may be time to buy a piston stop and make sure it hasn't slipped.

Crop Duster,

No I didn’t and I should have, one thing that has crossed my mind is the pulley slipping, it’s the original pulley, I’m not real confident when it comes to the timing marks

You need to get a piston stop and verify the damper hasn't slipped. One that old is suspect the rubber gets dried out and shrinks. New ones aren't all that expensive and they can be rebuilt if it is one that's not reproduced.

I’m going to pick one up this weekend, I don’t think TC is where the balancer says it is
