Just bought a Limited 4X4 PSD. Great truck. Lousy owners manual!
The manual speaks briefly to the Auto 4X4 selection, and even less about the locking hubs. It does not tell the procedure in locking the front hubs. Do you have to select 4WD Hi or Lo before locking them?
It also says that locking them is not recommended. Anyone know why they say that?
LOCK is a manual over-ride in case the vacuum part of the hub fails.
Use it:
To ensure positive hub connection (if you're worried it won't be there when you need it. )
If you are stuck and can get NO forward movement needed to lock the hubs automatically.
do all Excursions have "auto" locking hubs? .. I had been thinking that since there was a manual switch on the hubs that they needed to be turned to be in 4wd
Yes all Excursion have auto locking hubs with the manual over-ride. In fact, all trucks (Super Duty) that have Shift On The Fly (SOTF) have the same hub.

Auto/Manual locking hubs

Locking them causes undue stress & wear on the front axle driveline parts (learned this from 4x4x4x4). Although this is an issue if you lock them 24/7/365, I can't see it being a problem to lock during those really bad winter spells when you want to have them ready "just in case." Some of the guys from the Super Duty forums leave their manual hubs locked almost all winter without any issues.
Sorry Monsta... I smelled ESOF in the air and before I knew it, I was here. I've got the keys in the ignition and am driving back to the SD forum now...
I believe the jury is still out on the wear and tear part BUT you did say undue.
I'm not too sure that the expected life of the parts would be that diminished nor would I expect that fuel mileage would be decreased by a discernable amount. But what do I know...
I also have not ever read where it says that locking them is NOT recommended.
I will lock my hubs on my Toyota for a day every 6 months. Just to keep heat up the oil and seals. With the 22r engine I can really feel the extra drag even without the transfer case engaged. You may not feel it driving but the extra drag is there. My feeling is if it creates drag it also creates wear and lower fuel mpg. I don't get off road much which is why one 150 mile round trip every 6 mo. is in order. Funny thing is I have't done this in my EX

The inner ring should say auto and manual on it with an arrow the arrow indicates what position the hub is in when aligned with dot on hub case. The arrow I'm talking about is the small triangle looking arrow pointing out radially. Not the long circumferential arrow pointing in the direction of rotation
