Greetings,
Already having a 1995 EFI 4.9 motor (with all manifolds, wiring harness, only 20K), I just got a 1988 F150 (dying 4.9 to be removed) with a C6. I notice that the 88 has an electric fan that seems to force air, and this setup is not used on the 95. Will I need to swap this, or can I use the wiring and computer from the 95 motor? The 95 was a 5 speed, so I know I will need the flex plate to hook it to the auto, but will there be any other difficulties with the electronics if I use the new computer? (Actually I have the wiring harness and I am TOLD I have the compurer - not sure what it looks like). Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Also, any ideas as to why the 88 motor would have no compression in #2 and #4, and carbon like deposits in the pan? Lost oil pressure. They replaced the oil pump and the screen, but gave up after that. Motor has a knock. Runs (sorta) anyway! (Wondering if I should keep it as a potential rebuild) Thanks in advance, Jim
I think those engines should be basically the same.... I know at some point, they went to a completely different fuel injection computer setup, but i don't think that was until 96, so if I'm right, you're okay. With that in mind, here's what I would do (kind of standard procedure for swapping engines). Try to avoid installing any electronic stuff from the donor (95) engine. Take all of the sensors off of the engine you're removing and install them on the new one. Take the flexplate off of the 88 and install it on the new engine. Visually inspect both engines for anything else that might be different, and if you see anything, convert it to the 88 spec. That way you can just drop the new engine in and go. If, by chance, anything you swapped onto the new engine (sensors, etc) happens to be bad, you can just go to the parts store and know that you need parts for an 88.
Thanks, benwantland, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. While I agree with your basic idea fully, I sure would like to get rid of that Mickey Mouse electrical air blower.
